All of us would say that we want to live as long as possible. Yet, it can be difficult to enact the kind of changes which bring about a healthy, long life. Much of it has to do with the effort involved. In our hectic modern lives, it can be difficult to set aside the necessary time. However, this is something of a fallacy. The truth is, looking after yourself need not take up much time at all. Anyone, no matter what their schedule, can adapt their life in order to become healthier.

Repeat this a few times, and you have given your heart a good little workout.

The food you eat is another important aspect to looking after your heart. The main rule of thumb here is an obvious one: avoid useless fats as much as you can. Saturated fats clog up the arteries over time – and that is no good for your heart at all. Ideally, you want to try and get as many unsaturated and monosaturated fats in your diet as possible. These fats do not stick in quite the same way, and so are better for you overall. It is also wise to keep an eye on your cholesterol level, as this is a useful indicator of any potential future heart problems. Keep your cholesterol nice and low, and your heart will be grateful.

The first thing to say in regards to the lungs is that if you are a smoker – seriously consider stopping as soon as possible. Stopping smoking is, in itself, a huge topic which goes far beyond the reaches of this post. However, it is definitely something to bear in mind if you are currently a smoker. The main thing to remember here is that: anyone can successfully give up smoking, and you are no different. Do yourself a favour, and make this year the year you stop. Set yourself a date now, and go for it. You will be extremely glad you did. However, it’s not just tobacco smoke which is harmful to your lungs. If you live in the city, then you are considerably more likely to have lung problems at some point in your life. While moving somewhere different can be a huge lifestyle change, it might be one you would like to consider at some point.

Beyond that, what else can we do to keep our lungs in peak condition? As with the heart, exercise can play a hugely important role in keeping the lungs on form. The more exercise you get, the more practice your lungs get in breathing fast. This helps to increase their capacity – and that is great for lengthening their use.
