For years, people assumed the brain and the body to be separate. However, if there is one thing we are sure about in 2017, it’s the link between the two. Quite simply, a person’s mental health affects their physical health. So, if you want to improve your well-being, it is essential to start with the mind. Only then will you be able to strengthen the connection. But, before you can link the two, it’s a good idea to learn more about the relationship so as not to make any common mistakes.
Here, then, is how the brain affects the body.
Cortisol is the hormone the body produces to regulate stress levels. If there is too much of it in the body, you will feel anxious and uneasy. What’s worse is that it is hard to reduce the amount of cortisol in the body. Unless you can find a release, it will stay there and manifest over time. The reason this is unhealthy is the effects stress has on a person. From raising blood pressure to damaging nerves and causing hair loss, the symptoms are wide-ranging. Stress even damages mental health and causes brain functions to slow, which impacts your decision-making.
Another cause of stress is to make you feel depressed and fatigued. Aside from the effect on the brain, the impact on the body is significant. When you can’t be bothered to move, it is evident you aren’t going to exercise. It is obvious you need to hit the gym, yet you can’t seem to move your body off the sofa. This isn’t a physical problem; it’s to do with your mindset. Because of the feeling coursing around your brain, it prevents you from working out and regulating the body’s fitness. Of course, this can lead to everything from weight gain to high blood pressure.
The connection doesn’t have to relate to your fitness. In a lot of ways, the brain can impact every part of the body on a physical level. Your hearing is a prime example. Anyone of any age who suffers from hearing loss hates the idea of wearing an aid. Why? It’s because they don’t like the way it looks, or think that it makes them look old. It doesn’t matter that there are different types of hearing aids which are more sophisticated. You get it into your head and there is no turning back. From a lifestyle perspective, hearing problems are some of the most negative issues to have.
Modesty might be a virtue in society, but it doesn’t do your well-being much good. Not being confident is something that prevents people from taking part in physical activity. Say you want to join a sports team, for example, the idea that you’re not up to standard will put you off. You only need to look at women and participation in sport to see this to be true.
Quite simply, the brain has a bigger role to play in physical health than the body.
