For some reason, I’ve never tried to bake scones at home. The thought never really crossed my mind, even though scones are, in my opinion at least, a delicious pastry. I always thought they were difficult to make. Oh, how very wrong I was! This chocolate chip scone recipe is super easy, resulting in a soft scone rival to the ones you find in bakeries!

These scones are fluffy, light and can be made in under an hour! This recipe uses relatively simple ingredients and doesn’t require any extra steps or skills. The scone-like flaky texture comes from using cold butter that is not fully incorporated into the batter. Once the batter is done, the recipe calls for folding the dough multiple times to create the flaky layers and prepare it for baking. After baking, decorate the scones with a simple glaze- the directions for this glaze are also in this recipe!

HOW TO MAKE SCONES:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and prepare a baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl.
  3. Mix the egg and milk together in a small bowl with a fork. Set aside.
  4. These next few steps need to be done quickly while the butter is still cold. Cut the butter into small pieces and add it the flour mixture. Using clean hands, rub the butter into the flour mixture. Don’t fully incorporate it into the mixture; rather, use your hands to make the butter into thin sheets and distribute it evenly.
  5. After the butter is added, fold in the egg/milk mixture with a spatula. Batter should be sticky.
  6. Spread the batter onto a baking pan. Pour the chocolate chips on top and fold the batter multiple times, until the chocolate chips are evenly added.
  7. Cut the batter into about 10 triangles and place on baking pans. Cook for about 17-19 minutes, or until golden on the bottom.

HOW TO MAKE THE GLAZE:

  1. Add 1/2 cup of powdered sugar into a small bowl.
  2. Add about 2 tablespoons of milk and mix together with a spoon.
  3. The glaze should be thick. Add more sugar/milk as desired.
  4. Place the glaze in a Ziploc bag and cut off the the corner. Drizzle the glaze onto cooled scones. Enjoy!

TIPS

It’s vital that the butter remain as cold as possible by the time the scones get into the oven. The flakiness of the scones will come from the cold butter. Because of this, I’d recommend having the oven preheated and the baking pan already prepared before adding the butter into the batter, just so these steps are already completed!

In addition, you can customize these scones as much as you would like! Add in extra ingredients like blueberries, granola, etc. This recipe is not limited to simply chocolate chips. There are also many different ways you can decorate the scones, not just the glaze that is part of this recipe. Scones also taste well with cream cheese frosting or just plain!
