Does stress cause acne? With final exams and the holidays right around the corner, everyone has a little extra stress in their lives. You probably know the usual signs of stress- difficulty sleeping, irritability, headaches, the list goes on and on. What you may NOT have known is that your stress could also be the cause of that annoying “stress acne” that just won’t go away.
Waiting until the last night to start your final 20-page paper or trying to stretch your budget to buy gifts for the whole family can lead to adult acne because the increase in stress hormones throws your entire system off balance. Elevated levels of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline cause your skin to secrete more oil during stressful times which can clog your pores and result in breakouts. What’s even worse is that stress tends to reduce the normal healing rate of your body by half, making it harder to erase that stress acne.
While stress is difficult to avoid and those pesky stress acne breakouts are even more difficult to get rid of, there are a few strategies you can use to be a more relaxed and clearer skinned girl this holiday season. Make sure that you are eating healthy and getting enough sleep, even in the midst of exam week and holiday shopping. Additionally, work on sticking to a schedule and a budget so that you don’t end up with time or debt stress. Finally, above all, keep that face clean. Exfoliate, wash, and moisturize daily to keep those zits away or banish them before Christmas Eve.
