Taking care of your skin can be hard. How do we, as women know what we should or should not do? I was lucky enough to partner with Dove and had the chance to interview Dove Dermatologist, Dr. Alicia Barba, about taking care of one very important part of our skin – our underarms. This area is often a neglected when women think about their skin care. See below for Dr. Barba’s answers to 5 very important questions!
What should women look for in an antiperspirant?
A good antiperspirant is an essential part to every woman’s beauty routine. When selecting an antiperspirant, be sure to look for one that goes beyond odor and wetness protection. I recommend Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant because it offers 48 hour protection and provides added skincare benefits with its NutriumMoisture formula for softer, smoother underarms.
For women that workout or just seem to sweat a lot are there certain things in a deodorant that will help with this issue?
Absolutely. Look for the active ingredient in antiperspirants to be at least 15%.
What’s the best way to help alleviate underarm issues like red bumps from shaving?
If you’re experiencing underarm issues you are not alone. Nearly 2 in 3 women report having some kind of underarm issue, whether it be dry skin, red marks, uneven skin tone or irritation. It’s important to use a deodorant that contains a moisturizing formula that can soothe your skin and help alleviate these problems. If you have sensitive skin after shaving, consider shaving in the evening, and applying antiperspirant in the morning after your skin has had a chance to recover overnight. Be careful with stinging of the underarms with products after aggressive shaving. Deodorant/Antiperspirants should not sting. If this is happening, use one formulated for sensitive skin or cut down on the shaving a bit. Most women do not need to shave their underarms every day.
How do antiperspirants work?
The way antiperspirants generally work is that the active ingredient temporarily blocks the release of sweat from the sweat ducts. The salts dissolve into the skin and forms a protective layer over the mouth of the sweat ducts, which reduces perspiration in the underarm.
What is the best time to use deodorant? Should you reapply multiple times per day?
You can put your antiperspirant on at any time of the day that is most convenient for you. If you have sensitive skin after shaving, it’s ideal to shave in the evening, and apply antiperspirant in the morning after your skin has had a chance to recover overnight. You can also look into a fragrance-free antiperspirant for sensitive skin that has moisturizers, which can be gentler on recently shaved skin.
I tried Dove Advanced Care per Dr. Barba’s recommendation and love how it made my skin smooth. Everyone should give it a try – I know I’m not the only one who loves smooth skin.
