How to Keep Your Teeth and Gums Healthy

Other than the teeth we get as children, we only get one other set of teeth so it is important to keep them looking good. The health of our teeth and gums is so important. It can also affect other aspects of our health too and could aggravate problems with your heart. Then you think of the cost of having dental treatment and it makes you want to take care of your teeth all the more!


There are things that we should all be doing daily to take care of our teeth and gums. We need to make sure that we are brushing our teeth at least twice a day. It can be tricky to know how long to clean teeth for. The advice from general dentistry is that you should brush for at least two minutes in the morning and two minutes at night. Do you check how long you are brushing for? Two minutes last for longer than you think it does. I might need to get myself a little timer to make sure that I brush for the right length of time!

When you brush your teeth, you may notice that your gums bleed from time to time. This means that there is a buildup of plaque around the gum line. It could also be a side effect of other things like pregnancy. If you notice that your gums bleed each time you brush your teeth, then it shouldn’t be ignored. Make sure you book in to see your dentist if the bleeding gums carry on. We wouldn’t ignore any blood coming from any other part of our body, would we? We would have it seen to right away. So do the same with your teeth and gums. With the right kind of treatment, bleeding gums can be a thing of the past.

After brushing, we should also floss our teeth. This helps to get rid of any bits we may have missed brushing. We don’t want to have any bacteria left in there that could cause decay. The final thing to do each day is to rinse using mouthwash. Using mouthwash helps to freshen our breath. It also helps to eliminate any last bits of bacteria. Those three things are needed to keep having healthy teeth and gums.

What kind of toothpaste should you use for best results? There are a lot of them on the market, aren’t there? All are claiming to do different things. The general rule is, though, that as long as it has some fluoride in it, then it is ok. You need fluoride to help to strengthen the enamel of your teeth. This is the outside of the tooth and if it is strong, it has less chance of getting decay.

There are some other things that you can do to avoid getting problems with your teeth and gums. As I have said earlier, brushing twice a day is a must. If you are able to brush between meals, then go for it! If you can’t get to a sink to brush between meals, then consider using a sugar-free gum to chew. When you chew gum, as gross as its sounds, you get more saliva going to your mouth. The saliva can work against the acids in the foods you have eaten and balance them out. If you have a lot of acids in your mouth, it can wear away the coating of your teeth. This means more chance of getting tooth decay. So chewing gum freshens your breath, as well as helps fight tooth decay. Chewing gum for the win!

One of the other things to think about is that whatever goes past your teeth and gums, will affect them. Just like whatever food you put in your body, can affect your general health and weight, that works for the health of your teeth too. The best things to avoid are sugary drinks. They can cause a lot of damage to your teeth and gums. The sugars in them, cling to your teeth and if you won’t be brushing your teeth for a while, won’t be washed away. They can lead to gum problems and tooth decay. Then if a tooth starts to decay and you put more sugar in your mouth, it will decay the tooth more. As the drinks are liquid too, as silly as that sounds, they go all around and have full contact with your teeth. Sugary drinks are bad for general healthy anyway, so there is another good reason to stop drinking them.

Another drink that you might want to avoid is red wine. In terms of the health of your teeth, it doesn’t help. Imagine spilling a glass of red wine on a pair of white jeans. The stain would be a nightmare to wash out. Relate that to your teeth. ‘Spilling’ red wine all over your pearly white teeth can cause a lot of staining. It doesn’t lead to decay as such, but your teeth won’t look good if they are stained.

Another thing that stains your teeth is tobacco in cigarettes. I feel like the bearer of such bad news! The tobacco in cigarettes can cause your teeth to yellow and it can be permanent damage. Yellow teeth is never a good look. So if you smoke, it might be worth thinking about ways that you could give up.

One of the best ways to make sure that our teeth and gums are healthy is to have regular dental check-ups. It is recommended that we see a dentist every six months. Having a good dental care routine in place will help to reduce the chance of getting problems. If you have regular dental appointments too, any issues can be dealt with as soon as they arise. It can cost a lot to fix major dental issues.
