How To Start a Blog: A Simple 3 Step Guide

0

People are always asking me about blogging and how I got started. Well, honestly I am completely self taught.  I started out reading a lot of blogs, actually reading a lot in general.  I started blogging as a hobby late into my college career.  It wasn’t until years later that my hobby turned into a profitable hobby.  I realize how much time I wasted trying to figure out how to even start a blog and figured that other’s might be in the same situation.  Here are 3 easy and essentials ways to start a blog.

Step 1: Domain Name + Web Hosting

First, you will need to purchase a domain name and web hosting.  I use hostgator for both of these and highly recommend it.  I spent hours and hours and hours, heck probably days of my life trying to find a good host to use.  Then, I found hostgator and have been using it for years.  It is important to start your blog professionally by establishing a custom domain and have web hosting.

I like hostgator because they offer a live chat feature that has been extremely beneficial to me.  As I mentioned, I am completely self taught in the world of starting a blog.  I used that live chat feature many, many times when I started my blogging journey and was always so happy with the help I received.

You can also purchase your domain name through hostgator.  I like purchasing essentials through one place because it makes it so much easier for me to stay organized when bill time comes around.  When you are deciding what to name your blog, take time to really figure out what you want it to be about.  Domain names are so important because they essentially become the name of your brand.  Plus, it can really be tough to redirect your readers if you decide to make a change in your domain name.

So that’s the first thing you need to do, head over to HostGator.com and sign up.  They offer a variety of packages that will be sure to fit your needs, plus they often have specials going on so make sure you check for a little extra savings.

Step 2: Add WordPress to Your Blog

Another benefit of using hostgator is that they will actually transfer you over from blogspot, etc (often for a small fee), and their  live help will help walk you through exactly how to install wordpress on your blog.  It’s a very simple process, but seriously makes all of the difference.

If you are going to start a blog you need to be on wordpress.  I can’t stress that enough.  It will simply make your blog life easier.  I know many bloggers who are still on blogspot, I started there, too. If you are going to start a blog, just start with wordpress.  It will make using it so much easier and honestly, if you are going to take the time to start a blog, you need to start it off professionally.

3.  Create Your Only Identity

You don’t have to invest a ton of money into creating a custom looking website.  I have purchased and customized numerous wordpress templates on my own.  I recommend that you check out the below sites and purchase a theme that you think will work for what you want.

Remember these templates are great even if you don’t want a typical blog.  You can use them to create sites for a variety of topics/businesses, including restaurants, real estate, magazines, etc.

I hope these 3 steps help you create the blog of your dreams. Best of luck and feel free to leave me any questions in the comments below. 🙂
