Jena Malone Chosen as Tribute for ‘Hunger Games’ Sequel

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 27-year-old Sucker Punch actress, Jena Malone, has been offered the role of Johanna Mason in the second installment of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”.

In their return to the arena for an all-star death match, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) align with Malone’s character, Johanna Mason, who is an ax-wielding former Hunger Games winner from District 7.  According to THR’s sources, a few other actresses like Mia Wasikowska and newcomer Zoe Aggeliki were in talks for the role, but Malone won the part.

This could be a career-changing role for Malone who has been known for her cult roles in such films as “Into the Wild” and “Donnie Darko.”  She recently played a role in the highly acclaimed History Channel miniseries, “Hatfields and McCoys;” a true story about a legendary American family feud.
