Tips For Making Friends in College

It can be stressful going to college for the first time or even just starting a new year. A new year means new changes, new classes and sometimes even new friends. You may think that making friends in college is difficult, but it’s actually not bad at all. Plus, we’re here to help! Here are a few tips on how to find and make new friends at college this year.

Be outgoing:

One of the easiest ways to make new friends in any situation is to be more outgoing. If you’re willing to go up to people to strike up a conversation then go for it! We understand that that’s not the easiest thing to do at times, but even if you just talk to the person you sit next to in class it’s a start! Exchange numbers, emails or add each other on Facebook. Not only is it a great way for you to become friends with someone in class, but also a way to communicate with someone in case you miss a class or need some help!

Join a team or club:

Every college has plenty of athletic teams, club sports, organizations and clubs. Try something new and join one! Most of the general interest meetings are held at the beginning of the semester and you should try to go to as many of those as you can. They will give you a good insight on what the club or team is all about and just by going to the meetings you’ll be making new friends. Many of these organizations end up having a great bond and becoming great friends.

Leave your room:

Hate to break it to you, but you probably won’t make a ton of friends if you sit in your room all day. Make sure you get out and do something! Even if you’re just going for a walk, you can end up running into a familiar face or chatting with someone new. If you do want to stay in your room all day and aren’t doing much, leave your door open; you seriously never know who will stop by.

Join a sorority:

Sororities are a great way to make new friends. The girls end up becoming so close to each other and form a bond that lasts a lifetime. To find out which (if any) sorority is for you, attend a few of the general interest meetings.

It may seem scary or stressful, but making friends in college is a lot easier than it sounds! If you’re nervous, just remember that everyone is in the same boat. Almost everybody is willing and open to making friends. Just smile, be friendly and take a chance; you never know who you’ll meet.
