A newer and darker version of the classic fairytale “Snow White and the Huntsman” delivers some new plot twist. But do not think that this is a completely different story. There are still some of the original elements from the fairytale classic such as a huntsman that is sent to kill Snow White, a poison apple that sends Snow White to sleep, and the seven dwarfs. However, don’t think that these dwarfs will sing “Hiegh-Ho” only one of them actually does sing, and they don’t sing this song. There is a magic mirror as well, but it comes to life as a caped figure through the movie’s incredible special effects.
In this movie, Ravenna the evil queen and stepmother played by Charlize Theron is told by the magic mirror that she will soon be surpassed in beauty to Snow White played by Twilight’s Kristen Stewart. Snow White was locked in a dungeon by the queen ever since her father King Magnus played by Noah Huntley was murdered by Ravenna. Snow White escapes the castle when she finds out that the queen wants her heart for immortality. When escaping, Snow White stumbles across the dark woods. The queen hires a Huntsman played by Chris Hemsworth to find Snow White and bring her back to her. The Huntsman was the only person who knew and survived the dark woods before. He agrees only because Ravenna said that she could bring his wife back from the dead. Huntsman finds Snow White, but discovers who she really is (the king’s daughter) and decides to work with Snow White and a prince played by Sam Claflin in order to overthrow Ravenna and her dark kingdom.
Snow White is a very strong character in this movie, and is no longer the clumsy and love-sick character like Bella Swan in “Twilight.” Snow White fights with weapons in the movie’s long medieval fighting sequences, and even leads a massive group of huntsmen to fight Ravenna. It’s nice in movies every now and then to see a strong female main character like Katniss Everdeen in the “Hunger Games.”
Stewart’s acting was a bit trumped over Academy Award winner Theron. Theron wasn’t afraid to take on her role as the evil queen. What makes her so evil? Ravenna has magical powers from an old spell that makes her unconquerable. Through her powers, she was able to heal from a very deep stab wound, and was able to take up disguises to fool Snow White.
Unfortunately, the one part of the plot that was a bit unoriginal and disappointing was the fact that the evil queen uses her powers to suck the life out of girls in order to maintain her beauty and youth. The witch in “Stardust” played by Michelle Phieffer also did the same. Even the witches in the Disney Halloween classic “Hocus Pocus” played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy did the same as well.
The part of this movie that deserves some credit is the fact that the overall plot seems to indicate that true beauty does not come from a person’s looks, but rather a good heart. Even though this movie has some unoriginality with the plot, people should still go see this dark twist of a classic fairytale for its special effects, fighting sequences, and acting.
