In a time of quarantine and social distancing, finding ways to stay connected and do activities together can be a challenge. But thanks to a new Internet plugin, watching Netflix with your friends and family from the comfort of your own home is about to get easier. Have you ever called up your bestie and counted to three in order to hit the play button at the same time? Well you can kiss that goodbye thanks to Netflix Party.
What is it exactly? A Netflix-themed party with your girlfriends where you binge-watch as much Gossip Girl as possible with a cozy blanket and socks until you fall asleep? Sort of, but that’s only half the story.
Netflix Party is a Google Chrome extension that allows you to sync television shows and movies from Netflix to watch remotely with friends or family. The extension conveniently comes with a chat box to allow you to break down every juicy detail of Grey’s Anatomy or whatever show your heart desires while you watch.
How to Set Up Netflix Party
The extension, which was built for Google Chrome, can be found either on the Netflix Party website or the Chrome web store. Upon installing the extension, a small “NP” will be found to the right of your search bar on Chrome.
How To Use It
Once the extension is installed, you can go to Netflix and pick the television show or movie of your choice. Then, you can hit the NP button, which will now be bright red. The next step, is to start the party. You will have a choice of having complete control of the video or sharing the control with others. You will receive a personal URL to send to whoever you would like to join! They will need to have Netflix Party installed as well.
Now, what’s so great about Netflix Party? The web application syncs across the all of the users’ Netflix accounts. That means when user A hits pause, users B, C, and D’s computers will pause too. Missed the one liner that had your friend rolling on the ground? You can rewind the show for all the users too. Not enough? A chat box can be seen on the right side of your screen where you can customize your name and even pick an avatar for yourself.
This app has seriously been a game changer for me considering, in the past, I have called friends, counted down on my phone, and attempted to play shows at the exact same time. Most of the time, “on 1” or “after 1” became a bit of an issue.
Interested? If so, there are some great shows that are perfect for this new software.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
We’ve all seen this movie (if you haven’t, drop everything and watch it now), but seeing it alone would rob you of the opportunity of sharing classic lines like “life moves pretty fast” and “Ferris Bueller, you’re my hero.” Concoct devious plots to plan your next ditch day with great inspiration from this movie.
