When we make an effort to get healthier we usually focus on what we put in our body – but what we put on our body is just as important. Making the switch to organic makeup can be a great way to reduce the amount of toxins and chemicals your body absorbs, but there are some disadvantages to using organic makeup.

Pros of Organic Makeup

Commercial makeup products contain preservatives and chemicals you often can’t even pronounce; two of which, paragons and phthalates, are thought to cause cancer. These chemicals act as endocrine disruptors and are linked with mood swings, fertility issues and hormonal imbalances.

Choosing organic makeup is choosing to protect the environment and your body by reducing the amount of pollutants you’re putting into them. With 100% natural ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, macadamia nut oil, primrose oil and green tea extract, your body is provided with vitamins and minerals that will make your skin clearer and healthier. And since it doesn’t contain preservatives or artificial fragrances, their scents are usually less intense and they’re less likely to cause breakouts.

Cons of Organic Makeup
The biggest con of organic makeup is price. Since the ingredients are natural the products are usually more expensive and because they don’t contain preservatives the make-up won’t last as long. There are a variety of companies that sell all-natural or organic makeup products – so look at the ingredients list to make sure the product you purchase is truly organic. Look up each of the ingredients if you are not sure what it is.

Organic makeup is never waterproof or water resistant. If you’re looking for a mascara that won’t run at your brother’s wedding, it’s probably best to go for a commercial product.

There are usually fewer color options in organic makeup since the ingredients are all-natural. If you love vibrant colors like bright blues and purples you will have a harder time finding organic makeup, If you’re a lover of neutral tones this will be no problem for you.

Switching out a few of your most frequently used makeup products for organic alternatives is an easy way to improve your health, reduce environmental pollution and keep the cost low. Daily basics are easier to find in the organic makeup section, while special items are more readily available in commercial makeup.
