5 Reasons To Binge New Girl Now
Like many other people, I’ve spent these last few months at home. To entertain myself, I turned to what many others are doing: binge watching Netflix shows. I’ve watched many shows over the past few years, but I always come back to New Girl, a popular comedy starring Zooey Deschanel. New Girl is by far one of my favorite shows, surpassing even the most classic comedies such as The Office or Friends. There are so many defining characteristics that makes the show so unique and great to binge. Here are 5 reasons why you should binge watch New Girl right now.
1. Jessica Day
Jess Day, played by Zooey Deschanel, is the quirky and lovable protagonist of the show. As she tells the other characters in the first episode, she likes to sing to herself a lot, like a lot, and is an adorably goofy character. An elementary school teacher, Jess often incorporates her kiddie teaching methods into her personal life, such as the use of a “feelings stick” to help her and her roommates get through arguments. All in all, Jess’s goofiness and quirkiness brings a fresh perspective to what would have otherwise been just another comedy, and truly helps New Girl stand out from other similar shows.
2. The Perfectly Weird Characters
New Girl’s main cast consists of Jess Day, her best friend Cece (played by Hannah Simone), and her three roommates Nick, Schmidt, and Winston (played by Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Lamorne Morris respectively). Every single one of these characters are unique and weird in their own adorable ways, making the dynamics between them absolutely hilarious to watch.
For example, Schmidt is a neurotic control freak while Nick is a bank-distrusting, conspiracy theorist bartender. On paper, these two characters seem like they would never get along, but their long-lasting friendship says something else. Their relationship is extremely entertaining to watch, with them constantly insulting each other.
In addition, Winston’s character development through the show was incredible to watch as his character was not fully developed in season one. He transformed into a goofy self-proclaimed prankster (spoiler: his pranks aren’t actually as good as he thinks!) who is usually a voice of reason between the characters. He forms a great connection with Cece, whose development is also amazing as she evolves from a judgmental model to someone who fits right in with this weirdo cast!
3. It’s Absolutely Hilarious
I can confidently say that I have never laughed so much at a TV show before I watched New Girl. Other comedy shows out there are funny, but I have yet to find a show that is as funny as New Girl. Each of the characters have their own specialized type of humor, with Nick being the resident sarcastic and Winston the lovable goof. Not a single episode has failed to make me laugh, and the witty humor should definitely be talked about more.
4. The Inside Jokes (True American!)
Trust me when I say that New Girl has the BEST inside jokes. From the classic Cece and Winston mess-arounds to Ferguson the cat, New Girl has a whole bunch of long running inside jokes that make the entire show a million times better. Every episode where one of these inside jokes made an appearance was guaranteed to be a hilarious one!
Perhaps one of the most well-known inside joke is True American. True American is a game that the characters made up and the rules are never quite made clear. It’s a mix of “the floor is lava” and the characters shouting out random president names like JFK and FDR. One thing is for sure: it looks like a lot of fun!
5. The Guest Stars
Not only is the cast of New Girl outstanding, the guest stars are super fun to see, and they really help round out the show! Megan Fox is a notable guest star who became a semi-regular in season 5. Adam Brody was in an episode, as well as Linda Cardellini as Jess’s wild sister!
The most memorable guest star by far was Prince himself! Prince asked to guest star in the show as he was such a big fan! He stars in season 3, episode 14 when Jess and Cece attend a party hosted by Prince.
