Love pushes ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, LOVING celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (portrayed by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since.
Richard and Mildred Loving showed us that love is stronger than hate and has the power to spark real change. Inspired by their story, we are debuting emojis that represent many forms of love, including same-sex and interracial. In addition, during election season, we’re encouraging everyone to show that simply conveying love can change the world one state at a time. LOVING, a Focus Features release, opens in select citiesNovember 4 and expands across the country later in November.
This movie is already making moves in social media. While many platforms have added emojis that represent same-sex couples, there are no emojis or options to represent interracial couples. LOVING has teamed up with Twitter to change that and create an emoji that celebrates interracial couples. On Twitter, using the hashtag #VoteLoving, #ThisisLoving or #LovingMovie will automatically populate an interracial loving couple emoji, representing Mildred and Richard Loving.
To build on this, the LOVE-MOJI App just launched is a keyboard extension that offers a variety of interracial and same-sex couple emoji options! These emojis can be used everywhere — texting, Facebook, email, etc. Download the LOVE-MOJI here: For iOS or For Google Play or visit your app store.
Each day leading up to the election, LOVING‘s social pages will share a story from each state about ordinary Americans conveying love that are helping to better the state of the world. Find out more by watching the #VoteLoving video. To see all the various stories and social posts about conveying love from across the country, as broken down by state, visit VoteLoving.com.
