Q&A with Meghan Linsey

As an introduction, how would you describe yourself and what you do in your own words?

I am an artist, through and through. I love to write, create music and entertain on stage. I am also an entrepreneur, running my own touring entity and independent record label. I am an ambassador for rescue animals. I work with many rescue animal organizations and feed and care for every stray I come across. Above all, I am a feminist and strong woman.

You grew up in New Orleans. How did growing up there shape you into the singer that you are today?

New Orleans definitely shaped the way I sing. I grew up listening to soulful singers. I always wanted to be the kind of singer that makes you feel a lot.

You have always been a story teller when it comes to the songs you sing. Why do you think telling a story is important when being a singer?

I came up writing in Nashville. It’s a songwriter’s town. I started writing songs in High School and moved to Nashville when I turned 18. I just write about what I know. I always want to say something with the songs I sing. It’s important to me to be honest and write things that are real. It’s part of my art.

You have been singing professionally for a while now. What has it been like having been in this business for so long?

It’s been a roller coaster for sure. I got my first record deal with Steel Magnolia when I was twenty three and our first single was a big hit. I went from touring in a van to touring on a bus. And then things didn’t work out and my duo partner and I split up. Then I was back in a van, trying to figure out who I was and how I was going to transition into a solo artist. Then, The Voice happened. I’ve learned a lot. Most of all, I’ve learned what I am made of and what I’m willing to do and not do. These are important lessons.

Which singer has inspired you the most and what is your favorite song of his or hers?

Dolly Parton is my number one. She is just a total bad ass on every level. She does things her way and people still love her. It’s a hard balance. Favorite song: “Coat of Many Colors”. It’s just a perfectly written song and story.

You were on The Voice in 2015. What was that experience like and what was it like to work with both Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton?

I had a great time being on the show. It was stressful at times but very rewarding. I loved working with both Pharrell and Blake. They are so different from each other, but what I love about both of them is how genuine and generous they both are. I learned a lot about myself during The Voice process. It’s a very vulnerable thing to put yourself out there on a television show like that.

You were the runner up on The Voice which I bet was a crazy experience. How has life changed for you after competing on the show?

It’s been pretty incredible. It doesn’t change your life necessarily, but it does open some doors and make some things easier. I still work really hard, but it definitely gave me a platform and a way to get my name out there. Recently, I have just been playing shows and working on a new record.

You recently released your new single “Exes and Friends.” Can you tell us how you came up with this song? What do you love most about this song?

I wrote this song with my partner and producer Tyler Cain and my best friend Julie Moriva. Julie and I were watching the finale of the show Nashville, and Gunnar and Scarlett (two characters from the show) were in this weird relationship situation and one of them said to the other, “We’re somewhere between exes and friends.” Julie and I actually both wrote the idea down. We had a writing appointment a couple days later and on the way my windshield wipers were going and I started to write the chorus melody. When I got there, we wrote the song pretty quickly. I think it’s just such a universal concept. We’ve all been in the awkward in between stages of a relationship before.

You have an amazing sense of style! How has your style evolved throughout the years?

Oh wow! So much of it is trial and error. I remember in high school I used to wear pink eyeshadow and dark black eyeliner. I got made fun of a lot, but it was what I liked at the time. I just do what I like and what feels right. Sometimes I look back and wonder what I was thinking, but I think you have to have fun with fashion. You can’t take it too seriously.

Is there any fun fact about yourself that might surprise our readers if you were to share it with them?

I’m a total homebody and I don’t drink. I think people think that being an artist means you’re always out and partying. I’m not saying I’ll never have a drink here and there, but I just don’t need it. I prefer to be in control of myself. I also just love being at home with my dogs.

What advice would you give to struggling musicians out there who are trying to accomplish their dreams?

The biggest thing, as cheesy as it sounds, is to just be yourself. Completely. And don’t apologize. I spent so much time apologizing for being myself and I wish I would have learned to be comfortable in my own skin earlier in life.
