What’s a guy gotta do to find love around here?! If you ask Ozzy Morales, he would tell you to go on MTV’s Are You The One? (AYTO). Growing up in a small town in Costa Rica, Ozzy went from soccer star to now reality TV stardom! Check out our Q&A together to get to know all things on Ozzy from his love life, to childhood, and of course the scoop on AYTO.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in a small town, in the southern part of Costa Rica called Perez Zeledon, that’s where I grew up.
What was your childhood like?
I was a very active kid, and had a great childhood. Coming home from school to play with the kids in the neighborhood was an everyday thing.. Everything from hide and seek, tag, street soccer. The whole group of kids would go to the community pool almost every weekend and we would just swim and have fun.
What were you involved in growing up?
I was involved in club soccer all the way up to college, so this was definitely a big part of my upbringing. But like any other kid, I liked videogames, computer games, having sleepovers with my friends, going to the movies.. all the regular kid stuff.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
I would have to say my grandmother picking all the grandkids up every Friday night to go get Mexican food and a McFlurry, this was tradition for us.. and we couldn’t wait for the weekend to come.
What did you do after high school?
Right after HighSchool, I went to college, I was one of the top recruits for St. Lawrence University and played every game of the season. After my freshman year I got drafted to go play semi-professional and moved to Buffalo for the summer.
Let’s talk a little bit about AYTO, what inspired you to go on the show?
I had recently gone through a tough break-up. The opportunity came to me and after talking to the people close to me, the consensus was that an opportunity to find someone who could potentially be for the long run and coming out with some money doesn’t just show up to people’s door every day. I didn’t even apply, I was contacted and when it came down to it, if I didn’t sign that contract somebody else would, so why not?
Did you go in with a strategy to find your match?
No, I was one of the people that “played the game”. I was in a couple serious relationships in the house, even though they didn’t show much of them. Once I invested myself with Hannah and we spent all that time together and feelings started to become evident, I was done. I knew I had found what I wanted, and once we were declared “No Match” I was done playing with my heart and went with strategy.
Did you go into the house thinking you knew exactly who your match was?
No, we didn’t know anything, and that was clear week 2 with the blackout. I genuinely tried to find connections with some of these girls.
How did you mentally and physically prepare?
Mentally, I didn’t prepare.. and I don’t think anyone can be mentally prepared for what goes on in that house. Physically, I just made sure I hit the gym daily for the couple weeks I had once I was confirmed as a cast member.. Ate well, cut carbs and sugars and it definitely paid off.
What would you say was the hardest part of the show for you?
The hardest part of the show for me personally was leaving behind those destructive tendencies I had been on for so many years. I had to bring out a guy I didn’t want to bring out which was the guy who would play with girls emotions, find if there’s a connection and if there’s not, kick them to the curve and find someone else. Doing that was hard, because I went into the show thinking I would just find one person and stick with them for the whole time, but that’s not how AYTO works.
I see that you are still close to AYTO alum. What would you say was the best friendship the show gave you?
I was very good friends with Andre, but I think that friendship wasn’t reciprocated. After the reunion a lot of friendships were broken, but many others were reinforced. I’m still in touch with a lot of the girls and guys from this and past seasons, but it didn’t give me a best friend.
Were you surprised at your match?
I wasn’t surprised about my perfect match, but I didn’t have the opportunity to get to know her very well. Honestly any girl from that house would have been a great perfect match.. They were all great catches.
What’s your favorite memory from the show?
The show as a whole was a great experience. But the one memory that always comes up was my date with Carolina. Everything just felt right with her, we had fun and the monkeys were extremely cute.
Favorite funny moment from the show?
The Chicken Wing scene with Jaylan, he’s hilarious.
Once the show was over, what were you most excited to get back to?
A proper gym and my supplements hahahaaha
What advice would you give to yourself now before going on AYTO?
What is your daily workout routine?
I change my workout routine daily.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I would have to say playing World of Warcraft, guess you didn’t see that one coming.
Shake Shack or In-N-Out?
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
The one who falls in love is vulnerable to lose it all. -My Dad
What’s a quote you live by everyday?
Give me a place to die and I’ll move the earth.
