Sea Salt Butterscotch Pretzel Cookies Recipe

These Sea Salt Butterscotch Pretzel Cookies are the perfect blend of sweet and salty. They are sure to please any cookie eaters taste buds!

‘Tis the season for holiday baking! If you’re anything like me, you know how we can get a sweetness overload this time of the year. Mix up your usual fudge, sugar cookies and reindeer brownies with these Sea Salt Butterscotch Pretzel cookies. There is just something about giving someone a batch of freshly made cookies that I have always got great joy out of. Maybe it’s because they were always baked in my home growing up. Or maybe it’s because I know everyone loves cookies! I have been baking cookies and tasting cookie dough since I could see over the kitchen counter (thirty something years!).

Chocolate Chip has forever been my go-to cookie, but when I stumbled upon this combination I couldn’t resist. Since everyone knows how much I love sharing my cookies, I am always the one to bring them to any gathering or potluck…Basically, the cookie lady! These treats add a salty crunch to the typical chewy, but delicious cookie.  They are not only easy to make, but look gorgeous too. I make these year after year, and they are always a hit. Take them to your next holiday gathering, or enjoy them with a cup of coffee in front of your fireplace!

Sea Salt Butterscotch Pretzel Cookies Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of butter
  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 2 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups of light brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of chopped pretzels
  • 3/4 cup of butterscotch chips
  • 3/4 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Sea salt flakes (Optional)

How to make Sea Salt Butterscotch Pretzel Cookies:

1. Melt the butter. Use a medium sized cooking pan to melt butter on medium heat. Continue until the butter comes to a boil.

2. Brown the butter. Mix the melted butter around the pan until the butter becomes an amber color. Once the butter has darkened remove the pan from heat and let cool for 20 minutes.

3. Prep oven and cookie sheet. While the butter is cooling, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and start lining your cookie sheet with parchment paper.

4. Mix dry ingredients. Using a large mixing bowl, mix together flour, baking soda and sea salt.

5. Mix wet ingredients. Now that the butter has cooled, in a separate bowl stir it in with the eggs, brown sugar and vanilla. Once mixed together, pour this mixture into the flour mixture mentioned above. (this mixer makes things easier).

6. Combine both bowls of ingredients. Stir both of these mixtures together, until you get a dough like consistency.

7. Add in toppings. Next it is time to add in the butterscotch chips, chocolate chips and pretzels. I may or may not always add a little extra chocolate chips!

8. Form and bake cookies. Now it is time to start forming your cookies, and placing them on your cookie sheet, 2 inches apart. Bake your cookies for 10-12 minutes.

Trying to get that perfect cookie shape? This cookie scoop is a must have in any kitchen.

9. Cool cookies. Let the cookies cool 2-3 minutes on a cooling rack.

10. Finishing touches. Sprinkle with sea salt flakes, and enjoy!

Swap out butterscotch chips for white chocolate chips. Or use perfectly shaped mini pretzels, instead of chopped pieces!
