But, this reality that a movie adds to a story does not always meet expectations. The journey we have the opportunity to take, by reading the author’s words, is better than anything a movie can create.  Every word we read becomes our own little reality in our minds, that is different from every other person. Making the story more special for us to all enjoy. Especially when the story takes place in a different world, time or universe, such as The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games is a series that allows the reader to enter an unknown world and meet these strong characters with extremely complex relationships. Each relationship involves many layers and evokes deep emotion. Our heroine,  Katniss, is faced with many challenges, one being her feelings for the men in her life, Gale and Peeta.

It is easy as a reader to choose sides and have our favorites, in the complex battle for her love. As you journey along with her, you also gain an appreciation for her feelings for each of them.  Being able to hear her thoughts, through her narration and learn what is in her heart, you can better understand the outcomes of situations. As you read these stories, you not only create the settings in your head, but you create the characters. You take what the author gives to you and you have the chance to turn it into anything you can imagine.

The most unique opportunity we gain from reading a story, rather than watching, is the individuality we add. Which is why many series that involve these love triangles like The Hunger Games, have their fans joining teams for whom the main character will end up with. As I read through the games and lived through the pain Katniss and the other players dealt with, I think it’s safe to say most readers join Team Peeta. Reading the story gave me a deeper appreciation for her love for Peeta and I could better understand their relationship.

However, watching the movie, I did not gain the same feelings. Loosing different elements from the act of reading, including Katniss’ narration, I found myself rooting for Gale, fully knowing the outcome. Whether it was the actors they selected or the way they created the scenes I felt drawn to different characters, based on the reality brought to the story by physically watching it. Movies condense the stories, as well.

There is an extreme attention to detail when reading a story and it adds to each relationship. Cutting out some of that detail can have some strictly “movie-goer” fans perceiving the story in a completely different way than the readers. That detail not only gives you a better picture of the story the author set out to tell, you also can gain a fully comprehend the dynamics between each character.

Reading is a gift that we all are lucky to share. Sitting down and leaving your everyday life to travel to these places authors create is an indescribable feeling. Getting lost in a book can bring you so much joy and a better appreciation for the talented writers we have among us. Whether it’s during your morning commute, right before you go to sleep or the seconds your find away between your busy days, grab a new book and enjoy.

  6. I would like to win because I only read the first book and saw all the movies. I would like to finish the set. They can’t really show you everything that happens in the book, when they make it into a movie, so I’d like to get more in-depth and read the entire series. Thanks!
