Now that spring is here; it is a good idea to get cleaning the home. Over winter, our homes have been pretty much sealed off, particularly if you live in a cold area. We will have rarely opened the windows or doors, as it would let so much cold into the home. The thing with that, though, is that it increases the number of allergens and pollutants in the home. In summer months, our windows are open, and the air circulates better. So what can we do to get rid of the airborne allergens that have gathered in our home?
The first thing to do is to have a deep clean. It can be tempting to put off cleaning, but it is important. Not only does it keep dirt off things, but it helps to reduce irritants and allergens. So there is a very good reason that we have the phrase ‘spring clean’. Cleaning carpets if you have them is a good thing to do regularly. Cleaning your mattress is also a good idea, as well as the top of the refrigerator. Think about things that haven’t been cleaned for a while and get on it! When you dust, be sure to get rid of your feather duster. This only spreads the dust and allergens back into the air. Using a damp cloth helps to wipe away the dirt and grime. You can then just throw the cloth in the laundry when you are done too.
During winter, our homes can gather a lot of moisture. It can cause mould and mildew in our homes. Excess water can also cause water damage to our home, appliances or furniture. Water damage to a property can cause a lot of problems. If you are in an area where there is a lot of rainfall or even snowfall, it is a good idea to be on the lookout. If a lot of water seeps into the home, wood or furniture, lots of things will need to be replaced. So it is a good idea to have a list of handymen or water damage specialists on hand. A company like Elite Water Damage and Restoration Inc. is a good place to start.
As for the mould, this can be eliminated with a deep clean too. You could even use a dehumidifier if it is a recurring problem. You can pat walls dry if they are damp and allow them to dry. It might even be worth repainting some areas of the home with a specific anti-mould paint. It contains something that doesn’t allow mould to stick to it and grow. There are lots of specific mould cleaners that you can get. Just be sure to cover any flooring or carpet when using it; the stuff can be pretty strong! Opening your windows and airing out the home is a must. This gets the air flowing and reduces the chances of things like mould growing.
