#TheFirstPurge Spoiler-Free Movie Review

Are you looking for something fun to do this Independence Day?  Look no further because The First Purge hits theaters today!  If you were a fan of the first three terrifying movies the you’ll absolutely love The First Purge.  The story follows the citizens of Staten Island as they participate in what the government calls “the experiment,” however, the people of Staten Island have a choice of whether or not they participate in what will later be called The Purge.  The Purge is a twelve hour period where all crime, including murder is legal. Every person that agrees to stay on Staten Island during The Purge will receive $5,000 from the New Founding Fathers of America — a new political party. If they decide to participate in The Purge they will receive further compensation.  By centering The Purge in an impoverished burrow, the New Founding Fathers hope that bribing the citizens will increase participation and lead to a nationwide purge.

Forget everything you know about previous Purge franchise movies, because this one takes a whole new perspective on the idea.  It is centered around the government’s role in implementing The Purge on a group of people who don’t seem very interested in participating.  In addition to this new perspective, the number jump scares in the film are at an all time high. Just when you think there’s no way something else could jump out, there’s a maniac with a knife waiting around the corner to attack the protagonists.  My heart was racing faster and faster as the action came to a climax. If you love an epic horror film filled with scares galore then this is the movie for you.

If you’re looking for something else to satisfy your horror sweet tooth, be on the lookout for an upcoming television show called The Purge and make sure you see The First Purge, in theaters July 4th!
