Toy Story 4 Interview with Keanu Reeves, Tim Allen & Christina Hendricks – Will There Be A Toy Story 5?

I had so much fun at the Toy Story 4 press junket and am excited to share that I got to interview the voices of your favorite characters. We asked Keanu Reeves, Tim Allen, Christina Hendricks and the filmmaking team about the movie, new characters, the creative process behind making Toy Story 4 and more.

Here’s the scoop on everything you want to know about Toy Story 4. Also, don’t forget to read my Toy Story 4 movie review.

You’ll Get Emotional (again)

If you’re like most movie goes you cried during Toy Story 3 which means you’ll want to make sure to bring your tissues to follow up. The ending of Toy Story 4 might just be even more emotional! The final script left Buzz Lightyear himself speechless.

“I read through it and the end was so bold. I wrestled loss in my life… That’s what this movie is about, losing and gaining. The beginning is emotional, they trick you into this emotion and you get sucked into it. Caboom is so funny, everyone new is so wonderful to watch. The beauty of the way these monstrously idiotic writers come up with this story is so wonderful.”

Give Gabby Gabby A Chance

One of the new toys is a doll named Gabby Gabby, voiced by Christina Hendricks. The producers spoke about how they had never really created a classic doll in the Toy Story series, so Gabby Gabby was especially necessary in that way. She might be rough around the edges, but the cast assured us we would end up liking her.

Disney-Pixar

“She’s so lovely! When children see this movie, she might come across as the villain at first and then you realize she’s coming from a very loving place. I think that’s important to say that maybe you don’t like someone at first but…understanding their story is important. She’s special in that way and then gets embraced by the group and then it becomes about support.”

Introducing New Toys Is A Process.

When Toy Story has such iconic characters already, it’s difficult to introduce new toys. The filmmaking team emphasized how much effort it takes to create new and lovable toys for the audience. Although the addition of Forky, Duke, and Gabby Gabby, is exciting, it takes time.

“Look at the toys that we grew up with and look at toys that would help move the story along… Gabby Gabby, for example, the story would not work without her. She is an echo of Woody, and we needed her to be this legit and real and truthful human character… We make them essential to the story and that’s kind of our metric.”

– Director Josh Cooley

Duke Caboom Has A Soft Side

Keanu Reeves, the voice of Duke Caboom, has played many iconic action roles. You’d think the stuntman would be like any of his other characters, but we found out he’s got more to him.

Disney-Pixar

“We can identify with so many different people going through so many different things. So Caboom happens to be a cry baby with a super big heart, and brave, who loves life. So I think there’s a little bit of Duke Caboom in all of us.” – Keanu Reeves

Toy Story 5 Isn’t Off The Table

When it was first announced that the iconic Toy Story trilogy would be coming out with a fourth film, the public was weary. No one wanted their childhoods to be ruined after the perfect finale in Toy Story 3. But the filmmakers assured us that Toy Story 4 is worthy.

“Tons of responsibility, tons of pressure, lot of sleepless nights. We love the end of Toy Story 3, and feel like that’s the completion of Woody and Andy’s story, but there was still more of Woody’s story to tell.”

– Director Josh Cooley

Of course, someone had to ask what we were all wondering: if there would be a Toy Story 5. It’s probably not going to happen, but nothing is impossible.

“We thought Toy Story 2 was the last one… Now there’s an implied future to all these films, and we sort of never say never at Pixar. But as storytellers, we’re satisfied with closing the chapter.”
