4 Tips to Save Money on Airfare

The time has come to relocate your family.  You landed that dream job, and it’s time to head south to home shop.  The first thing you must do is book your plane tickets. For some of us, that means countless hours of searching and researching to find the best flight for the lowest price.

For most casual travelers, this can be a daunting task.  There is much to consider. Do you want a non-stop flight?  What time of day do you want to fly? These are some of the things that make up the pricing of airfare, but there are some tips to help you get the best deal.

Saving money on your airfare can help your travel budget and give you more money to spend on experiences while traveling.  These are a few of the pro tips for finding the best flight for the best price.

Extra Fees

Pay careful attention to the extra hidden fees when you are searching for flights.  Most carriers charge additional fees for baggage and a lot more for heavy baggage (over 50 pounds).  Some budget airlines even charge for choosing your seat in advance or even a snack or drink while in flight.  This is important to know when you are looking at sites that compare thousands of flights. These added fees are usually in the fine print, and you can be surprised by them when you go to the airport to check in for your flight. Often, the ones at the top are not the best value after adding everything up.  Especially if you are traveling with two bags for an extended trip.

Frequent Flyer Programs

Sign up for the frequent flier program of the airline that flies out of your home airport.  This will afford you more options with flights. Some frequent flyer programs offer discounted rates for signing up for the program.   Once you are on their email list and your home airport is selected, you can opt to receive weekly emails detailing special flights and discounted airfares. If it’s available, there are many credit card options that you can earn miles with everyday purchases towards booking free flights.  Many of the credit card programs offer a free flight after using the card for a month. This can help save money when working towards a vacation.

Flexible Day

If you are traveling for fun, you can be flexible with your travel dates.   You can sometimes save hundreds of dollars just by changing the day of the week or the time of your flight.  Highly sought-after morning flights for commuters and business travelers can be more expensive. Try taking off later in the day or at night to take advantage of saving.  Check out different airlines on different days of the week for the best deal. Sometimes airlines oversell their flights. When this happens, they will offer travel vouchers for people who can take a later flight.  If this works with your plans, take advantage.

Alerts

Sign up for email alerts from multiple airlines.  These alerts will send out an email when there is a change in the fare you were interested in.  With some, you can even set levels such as if the fare drops below this price, send me an email.  That way you can purchase quickly at the price you were comfortable with.

There is actually a nationwide migration of people moving south and west. Places, such as Houston real estate, Austin, and Seattle offer affordable options and are receiving the biggest gains from this migration.

Traveling can be a fun, fulfilling experience.  And whether you are heading South to find that dream home, or you are looking to plan a vacation to remember, these tips will help you find the best deal.  The next step is to pack your bags and hit the security line.
