4 Ways to Help Your Doctor Take the Best Care of You

When it comes to our health, we trust doctors to know what’s best for us, the right treatments for our illnesses, and we trust that they will do their best to make us feel better. But it’s not a one-way relationship. Doctors also need to trust us to follow their instructions, keep them updated of any side effects, and to take an active role in our health. It’s in everyone’s best interest to build a good doctor-patient relationship if you want to overcome your illnesses.

Don’t hide any details

Despite their ability to save lives and cure diseases, doctors are not gods. They are mere mortals just like us. As such, they can’t help you properly if you wander into their office, and just tell them one of your symptoms; they need as much detail as possible to understand what’s wrong with your body as a whole. Don’t lie about how many cigarettes you smoke each day, the medications you take, or how many drinks you have on a regular basis. Incomplete information increases the chances of you getting hurt by doctor’s diagnosis and treatments, and nobody wants that to happen. The more honest your are about your habits and lifestyle, the better you doctor can understand what might be causing your problems, or at least can recommend treatments that don’t disrupt your life too much. However, you should take their advice on board once they discharge you; they would really rather avoid seeing you too often.

Communicate

Communication is the key to any good relationship, and your doctor is no different. They don’t use fancy jargon to trick you or test you; it’s just how they’re used to communicating on a regular basis. If there is something you don’t understand, ask them to repeat it in a way you can understand; this is your health on the line so you don’t want to make any mistakes with medications and treatments. The more you talk to your doctor, the better they can help you. Seeing your physician treat you calmly and with respect might even help you overcome your fear of doctors.

Follow your care plan

Your doctor could prescribe the most revolutionary treatment plan the world has ever seen, but it still won’t be effective if you don’t follow the instructions. Do your part by following your recommended care plan, which may include things like monitoring your blood sugar, getting more exercise or taking your blood pressure. If a physician’s recommendation doesn’t sound doable or your medication isn’t working, and they will re-evaluate.

Take action

Doctors don’t recommend exercise, quitting smoking, and eating a healthy diet because they want to perfect their pitch; they do it because they know a healthy lifestyle is the best medicine they can prescribe. The more you take charge of your own health, the less you’ll have to visit your doctor. It’s not that they don’t like you visiting them, but they know they’re doing their job right if they only see you during your regular check-ups.
