Batido de Trigo: Puffed Wheat Milkshake with a Caramel Drizzle

This Wheat Milkshake is sure to draw all sweets lovers out of hiding, with a heath bar crumble that drapes a caramel-coated whipped cream!

Those late-night cravings are bound to kick in at some point, and most of the time they focus on those sweet treats that allure us in, making it almost impossible to resist. However, most of the times we delight in ice cream or find ourselves munching on a candy bar, we’re never satiated. Rather we are left wanting more. Finding a dessert that leaves you full and happy is rare to find. Batido de Trigo is the perfect after-dinner treat. It’s not too heavy as it has an airy milkshake nature, preventing that uncomfortably stuffed feeling.

But since it’s built with a plethora of items from whatever crunchy topping you choose. With Whipped Cream every sip brings with it a sweetness that you so desire. While every sip does leave you wanting more, its something you drink intermittently, and once it’s done you’ll no longer feel empty.

Background:

Batido de Trigo, a Cuban drink, in English is known as a Wheat Milkshake. While at first, the name may leave you skeptical of how good a milkshake with wheat in it could really be, after trying this recipe you will have no hesitation when defending its flavor. This milkshake can be done in many ways, allowing for the kings and queens of the kitchen to put their own artistic spin on it. While just blending milk and puffed wheat together will do the trick, this recipe will teach you how to further enhance the flavor. Milkshakes and whipped cream inevitably coincide. While many people leave their milkshake toppings at just that, we are going to take it a few delicious steps further. You can coat it with caramel and dash that with a crunchy candy topping whether it be Twix, Heath Bar, or even Reese’s Pieces.

This recipe is my go-to because whenever I want something that isn’t heavy after dinner but that will meet my sweets craving it manages to do both. Moreover, I find it perfect to settle in with as it can be had over a prolonged period of time. Rather than having a few bites and being done with this dessert, this treat allows you to cozy up with your favorite TV show while enjoying its company. Its companionship brings you tasty flavors and a crunchy complement that will resonate throughout the whole entire consuming experience. The ingredients are also long-lasting as once you purchase them it will allow you to make multiple.

Batido de Trigo Ingredients:

First, let’s chat ingredients…

  • Puffed Wheat: Use 1 cup of puffed wheat
  • Milk: Use 1 cup of milk (I used fat-free milk but you can use any that fits your dietary restrictions whether it be almond, oat, etc)
  • Ice: Use ½ cup of ice
  • Condensed milk: Use 3 tablespoons of condensed milk
  • Heath Bar: Use two miniature Heath Bars (make sure to crush them up)
  • Whipped Cream: Use the desired amount of whipped cream for the first topping (I used Cool Whip)
  • Caramel: Use the desired amount of caramel for a topping
  • Salt: Use a dash of salt before blending

How to Make Batido de Trigo:

  1. Prep the Heath. On a cutting board take two Heath Bars and mash them with a wooden cooking mallet. Many times they are known as crab mallets, but they are multipurpose.
  2. Put Ingredients in Blender. Add the 1 cup of puffed wheat, ½ cup of ice, 1 cup of milk, 3 tablespoons of condensed milk, and a dash of salt to the blender. Blend on the milkshake or smoothie setting.
  3. Add everything to the cup. Once the milkshake seems sufficiently blended (anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute) pour it into a cup and add your whipped cream, caramel, and crushed heath bar.

Notes:

You can also use almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, etc instead of plain milk. The Heath Bar can also be taken out for any other candy topping like Twix, or even Reese’s. For the caramel you can use chocolate syrup or a marshmallow one.
