“Better Nate Than Ever” is a Touching, Youthful Masterpiece- Movie Review

Better Nate Than Ever is a coming-of-age Disney film based on the book with the same name by Tim Federle. With the massive popularity of the book, it’s no surprise Disney has taken on the movie production. Nate Foster is a kid who strives to become a star on Broadway even if he doesn’t stand out in school as the cool guy. But his friend, Libby is willing to help make his dreams come true by dumping a last-minute audition on him.

This touching film explores family relationships and dreams that are bound to be inspiring and memorable. Better Nate Than Ever stars Rueby Wood (Nate), Joshua Bassett (Anthony), Aria Brooks (Libby), and Lisa Kudrow (Aunt Heidi) as they learn to navigate life and their inner dreams.

Like many Disney releases this year, Better Nate Than Ever portrays the theme of a child growing up in search of their dreams. This musical film shows us that having support will immensely help with achieving ones’ dreams even if you’re a 13-year-old who decides to flee Pennsylvania for The Big Apple. This movie is the confidence booster that we all needed.

Despite Nate’s small appearance, he often carries himself like an adult, especially when he finds himself penniless in New York. His maturity is reminiscent of Kevin from Home Alone, but he might be a tad more awkward. Even though he may not have reached puberty yet with his soprano notes belting in Times Square, his capacity to dream big takes us on quite the emotional bus ride.

Family Relationships

At first glance, this movie is like any other family-friendly film with a decent family and a kid who finds himself to be less admirable by his peers. But as Better Nate Than Ever kicks off down the city streets, we soon discover their unique relationships including the awesome Aunt Heidi. It’s nothing like a breath of fresh air to rediscover your dreams through a family member. Even better, climb out of a building’s fire escape like Westside Story. Unexpectedly, Better Nate Than Ever helps to rekindle relationships between family and we couldn’t be prouder.

It’s Okay to Dream

Many characters throughout the movie have a dream but oftentimes become discouraged when trouble arises. Even Nate himself second-guesses his dream of becoming a Broadway musical star after failing to land a role in a school play. But the support of his cool brother, his dramatic aunt, and his awesome friend help him off the ground towards the spotlight. Nate might’ve had some help from a good luck charm as well.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the dream-like musical scenes fit perfectly with the movie. Even if you don’t have dreams of becoming a Broadway star, Better Nate Than Ever places you under a spell to encourage you to reach for your dreams, whatever they may be. The ordinary storyline is beautiful, but the added comedy makes it a top contender for musical-themed movies. Check out this Disney movie if you loved The Greatest Showman.
