When you’re young, you feel like old age is another lifetime away. However, time flies. Before you know it, years have passed, and you’re approaching the next milestone birthday. You may assume that being healthy in old age is all about doing the right things when you reach retirement age. But you’d be wrong. It’s never too early to start building for the future.
The choices you make could have incredible benefits later in life.
Quitting smoking
Smoking is one of the most harmful habits out there. It damages almost every organ in the body. If you smoke, you have a higher risk of respiratory illnesses, cancer, and heart disease. These conditions are prevalent in older people. If you’ve smoked for years, your risk will be even higher. Giving up smoking has instant benefits for your health. Within ten years, your body will recover, and you’ll cut your risk of serious diseases to the level of a non-smoker. If you do want to quit smoking, there is help available. Your doctor will be able to discuss options like group sessions and nicotine replacement with you. Try and set yourself a target. If you can go without cigarettes for a month, there’s a very good chance that you’ll give up for good.
Exercising frequently
If you exercise in your adult years, your body will thank you for it when you get older. Regular exercise is incredibly advantageous when it comes to heart health. Working out helps to prevent high blood pressure and raised cholesterol. It also improves circulation and keeps the joints supple. When you get older, the risk of heart disease increases. People aged over 75 account for two-thirds of deaths caused by heart disease in the US. As you age, you may not be able to complete vigorous exercise sessions. However, some of the main aims of elderly care are to promote socialization and get older people moving. Walking, swimming and ballroom dancing are all popular options for seniors.
Drinking in moderation
An alcoholic drink is something many of us enjoy, especially at the weekends. Drinking in moderation shouldn’t cause you any physiological harm. However, if you drink too much, this can pose serious health risks. Alcohol is a poison, and it can damage your liver and kidneys. These organs act as the body’s filter, and they have to work very hard to process units of alcohol. If you drink a lot earlier in life, you can cause permanent damage to your liver. Drinking excessively can also increase your risk of certain forms of cancer, and heart disease. If you think you drink too much, keep a diary over the course of a few weeks. If your intake is too high, try and cut down. Go out less, and don’t buy alcohol to drink at home. You may find it really easy to reduce your intake. If you’re struggling, ask your doctor for advice.
