“Deep Water” is a Psychologically Addicting Slow Burn -Movie Review
A husband and wife in the small town of Little Wesley find themselves in quite the unusual marriage arrangement. Vic and Melinda try to keep their marriage intact to avoid the lengthy process that comes with divorce. Vic agrees to let Melinda see other men with the understanding that she doesn’t abandon her family.
However, Vic finds himself the target of accusation for the murder of Malcolm Mcrae. Only then, does his fascination grow to the point where he’s willing to get rid of his wife’s lovers one by one.
Deep Water is a dark, cold slow burn that intensifies as Vic becomes more obsessed with murder and his wife. This Hulu film deals with a loveless marriage, crime, and gender dynamics within a marriage. Starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, Deep Water will have you at the edge of your seat!

Loveless Marriage
As with many psychological thrillers, a loveless or broken marriage is often a stepping stone that leads to a gruesome ending. Without much background of Vic and Melinda’s relationship, we can already assume that the equilibriums off. If one didn’t know about the synopsis of the film, you wouldn’t know about their preconceived agreement as Vic stares at her through the shadows, it’s only then, do we understand their uncomfortable relationship that’s bound to rot like an apple.
Crime
What might seem like a sane father taking his child to school is a man that is slowly becoming unhinged. Vic harbors deep affections for Melinda that might end up suffocating all those around him. As each lover seems to disappear into thin air, his wife is barely able to stay afloat. When more people start to learn about Vic’s dark secrets, what will he do to keep them from ruining his ‘perfect’ family?
Gender Dynamics
Marriage is a chance to find happiness, although Vic can’t seem to keep his wife happy for very long. He is often scraping the surface on ways to make Melinda happy, but his thoughts of murder begin to infect him. Melinda has moments where she fights against Vic for his actions; however, her strength to bring justice to the men he has killed starts to fizzle out. Furthermore, Vic is able to successfully assert dominance over her.
Final Thoughts
Deep Water has a slow start but quickly becomes a cat and mouse game. Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas carry out their respective roles nicely as if I was watching Fifty Shades of Grey in an alternate universe. Although the intense murder scenes seem to put me on edge, I was wondering when Vic would receive the karma that he deserves. If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, Deep Water may be up your alley.
