Forgotten Parts Of The Home That Could Benefit From Your DIY Magic

No matter how much (or how little) you enjoy DIY, it is likely that there are certain parts of the house which you routinely forget about. Everybody does this, and for a time it won’t matter – until you find that suddenly there is a part of the home that desperately needs some work in order to keep up with the rest of the home. Fortunately, there are some common culprits here, so it is quite easy to become aware of them and to ensure that you don’t allow it to happen in your home. With that in mind, let’s look to the areas of the home that most people completely overlook for long periods of time.

The Bathroom

Given its central importance in your daily life, it might come as a surprise that the bathroom is routinely forgotten about, but so it is. It might be something to do with the fact that it tends to be the smallest room of the house, or one of the smallest. Or it might just be that it never seems like anything in the bathroom needs changing until it is frankly a little too late. Either way, there are a number of easy things you can do to breathe a little fresh life into your own bathroom, and it is worth doing so if you have noticed that you have not touched yours in a long time.

First, as with many rooms of the house, the bathroom can definitely benefit from a lick of paint. It can be awkward, because of the size of the room, getting into all the nooks and crannies there, but it is worth it for how hugely it can transform the entire room in an afternoon. You don’t even have to change the color scheme if you don’t want to – you can just paint over with the same colors, and it will still make a huge difference.

If you are looking for a bigger bathroom change, then you might even want to consider a change of the shower or bathtub. A common issue in many bathrooms is there being a lack of space, so if this is true for yours you might want to consider doing away with your traditional bathtub and installing a walk-in shower instead. This can make a huge difference to just how spacious the bathroom really is, and that can help to enjoy the space all the more.

With the right changes, the bathroom can once again take its place as a central place of importance in the home. But what other areas of the house might be suffering from the same kind of neglect?

The Basement

Not all homes have a basement of course, but if you do you might well find that it is not somewhere you go very often. Unless you have converted it into something else, it is hardly the kind of place you need to spend much time. But leaving the basement alone for too long can be a bad idea, as it is one of the areas of the home most prone to certain problems, some of them serious. As it happens, focusing on your basement at least a little is likely to be a good idea. So what exactly should you be looking out for in your basement if you have not been down there for a while?

For a start, you always need to keep an eye out for issues such as flooding. This can happen in any basement, and it can be both expensive and difficult to deal with if it does occur. Learn how to diagnose and remedy basement flooding problems here, and you will be off to a good start in terms of understanding a little more about basement flooding. It’s also always possible for whatever you have stored down there to become damp or too cold. You should be sure to only keep items which are not sentimental down there for a start, but also use a dehumidifier every now and then to remove any moisture in the air as well. The more you can do this with your basement, the better condition it will be in in the long run.

Keeping the basement in a good state of repair is always going to be a good idea for the home in general. But there is one other part of the house which is similar in a way to the basement, and is ignored just as frequently. Yet it too could benefit from some tender loving care.

The Loft

For almost all homes that have one, the loft becomes either a spare bedroom or a storage space. If it is the former, it is likely that you do spend a good deal of time in there as it is. If not, you probably need to pay it a visit and give it a once-over every once in a while. You might be surprised at just how easily dirt can build up in a space like that, and the last thing you want is to end up with a severe problem. If you leave it for too long, you might even develop a rodent problem, and that can lead to an unhealthy household for all.

Be sure, then, to go up there and keep it as tidy and clean as you can. Circulating whatever storage you have up there will ensure that nothing gets damp or eaten, and you will also want to make sure that you give it a good deep clean every now and then too. These simple steps should be enough to keep it in a good state, and it won’t take long to do, so make sure you really do it.

As long as you pay attention to the above three spaces, you should find that you are able to keep your whole house in a much better condition. While it is easy to forget about these rooms, it is worth making the effort to look after them. It can really make a huge difference to how you live.
