Get The Look: The Queen’s Gambit

The Queen’s Gambit managed to get us all hooked on chess back in October 2020. According to CNN, ‘sales of chess sets went up by 87% in the US in the first three weeks of the shows release’. However, the show didn’t just encourage a peak in sales of chess sets. We also became encapsulated by Beth Harmon’s ever-evolving wardrobe. As 2021 is set to see the return of 60s fashion, now seems like the perfect time to take inspiration from Netflix’s Chess Grandmaster.

This first look shows us how Beth has become more confident within herself. She looks effortlessly cool in a red and navy striped v-neck top and navy mini skirt. To recreate this look wear a navy blue mini skirt to pay an ode to Beth’s outfit and pair it with a blue scoop neck blouse. Adding a structured red shoulder bag and a red headband will give the look the same effect as Beth’s striped top. Finish off with black pointed-toe flats and don’t forget the 60s style cat-eye sunglasses. This look is guaranteed to make you feel cool and confident!

Beth wears this outfit when she is challenged to solve a chess problem (which she obviously does in record time). This outfit is perfect for a 60s inspired work look for channeling Beth’s extreme concentration and incredible problem solving skills. Start with a black and white contrast blouse paired with black cigarette pants and caged Mary-Janes. Adding a thin-strap gold watch will create a sophisticated vibe and wearing a black headband will add a playful contrast. Complete the look with a structured black shoulder bag and you’ll be ready to take on any challenge!

Beth’s Stand Out Coat

Top | Skirt | Boots | Coat | Gloves | Bag

When you think about Beth Harmon’s style, your mind is probably flooded with images of incredible coats. This look is created to draw attention to one standout piece (i.e. the coat). Throughout the show it is obvious that, when choosing her outfits, Beth loves to colour block. You can incorporate this by wearing a black mock neck top and pleated mini skirt. Wearing leather gloves and black ankle boots give the look a chic edge. You can match the bag to the coat to tie everything together, thus ending up with a sophisticated and well put together outfit.

Jolene’s Simple and Stylish Look

Sweater | Trousers | Leather Blazer | Boots | Bag | Sunglasses

Beth Harmon isn’t the only character in The Queen’s Gambit worth taking style inspiration from. Jolene shows us how to take a simple outfit to the next level. Start with black cigarette pants and a brown high neck sweater, then layer a leather blazer on top. Leather blazers have been massively in style over the past year and still continue to pop up all over Instagram so, if you haven’t already, it’s worth adding one to your wardrobe. Add a pair of square-toe ankle boots and a leather tote bag. Complete the look with cat-eye sunglasses. This look proves that 60s fashion is already making a comeback!

Beth’s Chessboard Look

Dress | Heels | Bag | Bracelet

This look of Beth’s cleverly mimics the chessboard and shows how much of an impact chess has on all aspects of her life, right down to the way she dresses. This long sleeved black dress features a white stripe down both sides and pays homage to Beth’s monochrome dress. Slip on a pair of black kitten heel pumps and a gold bangle and store your belongings in a white shoulder bag. Whilst this look is simple, it is also sleek and sophisticated.

The Queen’s Gambit is sure to carry on being a source of inspiration for 60s style outfits throughout this year. What’s your favourite look from the show?
