How did you get started in the music industry?

I started writing songs when I was 14. I formed a band and started playing anywhere that people would listen around Pittsburgh… from there it’s been a very slow but steady ride. Looking back, it’s amazing how one thing has led to another. I could never have planned or written the way it’s all gone so far.

What inspires your music?

I’m inspired by a lot of things… that’s an ever changing thing. To me, inspiration always comes from real life. My most recent album “Steel Town” is heavily inspired by my hometown and the moments and people who made me who I am.

Tell us about your latest album, Steel Town.

Well I guess I already started answering that one haha. Half of the record is about looking back, and the other half is about fighting to be present and in the moment. I wanted to make a record that you could listen to from start to finish so there is a little bit of everything in there… heartbreak, hometowns, new love, true love, basement bars, the simple things, and growing up. It’s all in there.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned while touring?
It’s an amazing thing to see yourself in your audience. Relating to and connecting with them is the lifeblood of my career.
What’s the hardest part about being on the road?
Missing my wife, Gracie.

What’s a day in your life like?

On the road: wake up, get some coffee at a gas station,  drive a little bit, get to the venue, load-in, soundcheck, maybe go find a cool local spot to eat, explore, play a show, hang with fans, load up the trailer, have a beer(s) and maybe some pizza, then go to bed, wake up, and do it again!!

Do you have any advice for up and coming artists?
Be prepared for a long road, and enjoy the ride!

Do you have a final message you’d like to share with your fans?

I appreciate everyone out there who has let my music be a small part of your life. It really is an honor. I hope to see you at a show soon! Check stevemoakler.com/tourdates and find out when we’re coming near you.
