Get The Scoop On Gal Friday Band
When the sisters of country trio Gal Friday heard the term “girl Friday” described on television, they knew instantly it was the perfect name for their band. “A woman on television referred to her best friend as her ‘girl Friday’ – her confidant, her Friday night out, her ride-or-die,” says member Melissa York. “We tweaked it a bit, being from the south – and Gal Friday was born.” Comprised of York, Ashley Min and Lauren Wilson, the sound that accompanies the endearing name is a sonically pleasing blend of the best their upbringing had to offer: southern gospel, rock, bluegrass and country. Their synergistic sibling harmonies and bluegrass soul peppered with notes of southern rock has resulted in a style that is unique and undeniably catchy.
How did you three get started in the music industry?
We grew up singing in church and as we got older, many people would come up to us and ask us why we were not performing professionally. As sisters, we would get asked to sing all the time at events so we wondered why we had not thought of that ourselves. So we put a band together, gave ourselves a name and have been performing ever since. ~ Ashley
What influences your music?
I think that what drives our music is our passion for singing about real life and creating a very authentic sound. We were raised on bluegrass, gospel and good southern rock. We shaped our music over time to include our love of country music and feel that what we are doing now is very organic and unique. The songs we write are inspired by our family, our friends and seasons that we walk through. ~ Lauren
What do you each feel you bring individually to the band?
We all sing and write our music which keeps us very busy but each of us have special gifts that help make our band what it is.
Melissa is gifted in the art of partnerships and all that social networking has to offer. She is innovative with our brand and pushes us to think outside the box with everything that we do. She also claims she is the “funnest” of us three.
Ashley takes multi-tasking to a new level in wrangling all of the moving parts for our band and tries to keep all of us in line and on time to wherever we are going. It’s a tough job but she is the most disciplined person ever! Lauren embraces creativity in writing music and connects to people on a personal level, on and off the stage. There is a passion for performing and a desire for collaborating with others to create good songs.
You just released a new single, “Scrapyard.” What influenced the song?
“Scrapyard” is about getting over heartbreak, realizing your worth and moving on.
Can you give us a lyric or two?
“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
My next man better treat me better.
Treatin’ me better shouldn’t be too hard cause he left my heart like a bone in a scrapyard.”
What can we expect from Gal Friday Band after the release?
We are looking forward to Pepsi’s Gulf Coast Jam where we share the stage with some of our favorite performers like Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town and many others over the three day music festival. It is an incredible experience that is happening Labor Day Weekend. We are also gearing up for our album “Smoke and Mirrors” to be released this fall. We can’t wait for everyone to hear what we have been working on for this project. ~Melissa
What’s a day in your life like?
Honestly, it’s a little insane and at times feels like we live a double life going from yoga pants and carpool to our boots and big hair. It takes a whole lot of prayer and a full pot of coffee to get through a day. ~Lauren
What is your advice to aspiring artists?
Some of the most important things we have learned over the years is:
You have to develop a healthy level of skepticism. It’s okay to not trust everybody you meet along the way.
You have to be willing and ready to do the hard work.
Be kind to people no matter who they are.
Do you have a final message you’d like to share with your fans?
Thank you for all of the support and encouragement. We are excited to share our new project with everyone and can’t wait to hit the road to perform for all of you. We could not do this without you! ~Ashley
