“Good Boys” is Hilariously Raunchy – Movie Review
Seth Rogen has done it again. Good Boys, produced by Rogen, is set to become the biggest comedy of the year. You’ve probably seen the trailer, where the three stars of the film are told by Rogen that they can’t watch their own movie. This is because Good Boys is an R-rated kids comedy, centered around three young boys maneuvering their way through the trials of middle school. Here’s the scoop.
Genre: Comedy
As stated before, Good Boys is a film following a group of friends navigating their way through middle school. Max (Jacob Tremblay) is invited to his first kissing party, but he doesn’t know how to kiss. In an attempt to learn, Max, along with his friends Thor (Brady Noon) and Lucas (Keith L. Williams), steal Max’s dad’s drone to spy on the teenage couple next door but when the girls next door catch them, the drone is destroyed and the boys go on an epic adventure to replace it before Max’s dad gets home.
The film is filled to the brim with bad decisions on behalf of the young boys (what can we expect, they’re 12). Their quest for a replacement drone finds them in situations involving a frat-house paintball war, accidentally stolen drugs and running from the intimidating teens next door. If this scenario doesn’t already seem funny enough, just wait until you see the profanity laced throughout the film.
Thoughts
Chocked-full of raunchy adult humor, Good Boys leaves me wondering who the intended audience is for the film. For adult viewers, we get to laugh until we cry all while remembering the awkwardness of being 12 years old. Still, the film reflects many of the characteristics found in any great coming-of-age movie usually meant for a younger audience. There is a real storyline here, and we get to watch the relationships between the main characters evolve as they grow up, while maintaining the humor. So the question we’re left with is this: is this a movie that I should let my 13 year old watch?
I cannot have a perfect answer for this as I don’t have children of my own. However, going off of personal experience, I can confidently say that this would have been one of my favorite movies had I watched it in middle school. That being said, I was generally allowed to watch rated-R movies when I was 13. My opinion on the matter may be drastically different than many parents who watch the film. I am definitely not an expert here though.
What I can say for sure is that Good Boys is not for viewers who don’t enjoy crude sexual content. Believe me, this movie is overflowing with it. In one scene in particular, the boys decide to arm themselves with “weapons” found in Thor’s parents’ bedroom. I assume you can imagine what these weapons are. It is hilarious.
Cast & Crew
Good Boys is produced by Seth Rogen, Lee Eisenberg, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. It is also directed by Gene Stupnitsky. Viewers can definitely see Rogen’s personal style of comedy.
The actors in this film are adorable. Jacob Tremblay from “Room” plays cool-boy Max perfectly and always reminds us about the importance of consent when kissing girls. Brady Noon, who plays Thor, also stars in HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” His character is unexpected, as he seems like the bad boy of the group but actually turns out to be a sensitive theater kid. My favorite actor in the film is Keith L. Williams hands down. Willams plays Lucas, who is always honest and tries to keep the group out of major trouble. He is incapable of lying, which is apparent when he tells a police officer in a convenience store that the boys have drugs. He’s just too sweet!
Supporting characters who add to the greatness of the film include Molly Gordon and Midori Francis. These girls are great! They play the teens next door who chase the boys in order to get their drugs back. Molly Gordon also has a role in “Life of the Party,” and Midori Francis stars in “Ocean’s Eight.”
Rating and Where to Watch
Good Boys is rated R for drug and alcohol material, strong crude sexual content and language throughout involving tweens.
The film premiered in theaters August 16, 2019. Good Boys is available for streaming on all HBO services. You can also rent or buy it on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes and Vudu.
This is the scoop on Seth Rogen’s film Good Boys. If you haven’t seen it yet, 10/10 would recommend. Prepare to laugh hysterically and reminisce on your awkward prepubescent years. Also, check out more of our reviews!
