Preparation

Skip the pizza dough and pizza sauce preparation instructions if you have previously prepared or storebought options.

Homemade Pizza Dough

  1. In a little bowl, combine warm water with a teaspoon of sugar. Toss in the yeast and whisk it all together until dissolved. Just leave it sitting there until you see bubbles forming on the top.
  2. Now, take a big bowl and mix together 3 cups of flour, salt, another teaspoon of sugar, and if you want, some dried herbs. Make a little hole in the middle and pour in the yeast mixture and some oil. Give it a good stir until it’s nice and smooth.
    * If it’s too sticky, just add enough extra flour until it becomes a soft dough.
  3. Place the dough on a floured surface, and squish! If the dough feels sticky, add a bit of flour until it becomes smooth and stretchy, which should take about 6-8 minutes. Toss the dough into a big, greased bowl, flipping it over so the top gets greased too.
  4. Cover it up and let it rise in a cozy spot for 30 minutes. Then pop the bowl in the fridge overnight and let it chill. Before you start rolling, your dough will need to have been removed from the fridge for at least 30 minutes thanks to baking best at room temp.

This is enough dough for 3 medium or 2 large pizzas (and many mini pizzas!).

So, if you only want to make one, go ahead and make the whole batch of dough, putting the extra in a sealed container for freezing.

Just let it thaw overnight when you want to use it.

Homemade Pizza Sauce

  1. Dump the tomatoes into a big bowl and, with fingers, kitchen scissors, or stick blender, mash them up until they’re chunky but not runny.
  2. Set a saucepan on medium heat and pour in some olive oil. Throw in the grated onions, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Let that pretty potion sizzle for about 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Now toss in the garlic and let it cook for another 30 seconds or so.
  3. Add the mashed tomatoes with the sugar and salt. Let the sauce bubble, then turn down the heat to medium-low to simmer for about 30 minutes.
  4. Give it a taste. If you want a stronger tomato flavor, you can keep simmering the sauce for another 15 minutes.

Any leftover sauce is good in the fridge for a week or in the freezer for 3 months.

Halloween Pizza

  1. Preheat oven to 450 F.
  2. If using homemade dough, roll it out on a nonstick baking sheet or pizza pan. If using a storebought crust, you can prep it on the counter as it will be going directly on the oven rack when ready.
  3. Spread the pizza sauce and sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the crust.
  4. Splitting the string cheese into thin strips, create a spiderweb atop the even layer of cheddar. Start placing the strips of cheese along the outer edge, then work your way inward.
  5. Place 2 black olives together on the web, as these are the head and body of our spiders. Add as few or as many spider bodies as you’d like on your pizza.
  6. Slice 1 black olive in half lengthwise, then into 8 thin strips to arrange around the two whole black olives on the pizza. These are the spider legs. Repeat until all olive bodies look like spiders.

Tips and Variations

  1. Make sure to heat oven fully before cooking your pizza, to ensure an evenly crispy crust.
  2. Do not place a pizza with homemade dough straight on the oven rack. Storebought crusts are typically par-baked beforehand and are far less likely to turn into a molten mess in the bottom of your oven. Homemade crusts are unequalled in taste but best baked on a sheet or pan.
  3. Vegan or lactose intolerant? This recipe is so easy to adapt for your dietary preferences. Just use your favorite vegan cheese options instead.
  4. Not in love with olives? You can easily create each Halloween spider with two mini pepperonis, slicing another mini (or full-size) pepperoni into eight legs.
  5. Cheddar too sharp for your tastes? Use an even layer of shredded mozzarella instead, followed by a thin layer of pepperonis. Then arrange your string cheese web atop the pepperoni layer, nixing the cheddar while still allowing the white web to stand out.

Food for Thought

This Halloween pizza recipe is so fun and easy. Use storebought (or premade) mini pizza crusts to make it an easy edible party or class craft.

Don’t limit this yum to the season, either.

This spider web pizza was so popular at my daughter’s bug-themed birthday, it made a comeback at her brother’s Spiderman birthday… and again at her mad science party years later!

You won’t catch any flies with these webs, but you’ll catch plenty of eyes! Better have some recipe cards ready to hand out.
