How To Safely Pull Out A Loose Tooth Without Any Pain

Teething is a difficult time for both children and parents. One of the biggest fears in teething is when a child has a loose tooth that they won’t be able to pull out themselves.

A child’s loose tooth is just another rite of passage to a joyful smile!

Here are some helpful tips on how to safely pull out a loose tooth without any pain or injury, even if you’re doing it by yourself.

The mouth is extremely important for our overall health and oral hygiene can affect your immune system. Pulling your own teeth with your own hands can be scary so the best option is to have someone with you.

Warning: It is advised that you do not attempt to pull out a tooth if there is much pain or discomfort is felt when trying to remove the tooth. Be sure that any permanent teeth or surrounding teeth are at high risk of dental problems.

If there is any pain, consult your dentist’s office immediately so they can safely look at it and possibly give you some pain medication. There will be less pain and will help with your child’s mouth.

If the tooth breaks off while attempting to take it out, visit your dentist immediately.

How To Safely Pull Out A Loose Tooth Without Any Pain

Loose baby teeth and a wiggly tooth are an experience in understanding how teeth work.

Prepare the following items:

  • string or dental floss (as long as the length is equal to two arms)
  • masking tape, scotch tape, or duct tape(just a small square it’s enough)

Steps:

  • The best way is to lay your child on a flat surface, such as the floor or their bed.
  • Position yourself behind your child’s head and leaning over them so that you’re face to face with the loose tooth.
  • Take the string, dental floss, or masking tape and place it between your teeth.
  • Now take the string or whatever you used with both hands on each end of it tightly.
  • Pull the string or dental floss back and forth to try and loosen the tooth.
  • After a couple of minutes you should be able to pull out the loose tooth! You can also try using some kind of toothpick to loosen the tooth up.
  • Clean off any remaining pieces of the tooth with some water and soap.

If there are any remaining teeth that may cause your child discomfort, you can try and remove the teeth with floss or a toothpick.

Tooth Fairy Pillow Method

The first option is to make a tooth fairy pillow. If your child is old enough, let them choose the fabric for their own tooth fairy pillow.

If they are not, help them pick out something that they would like to have as the exterior of their tooth fairy pillow. Place some dental floss inside the tooth fairy pillow.

This is important because if your child falls asleep while it is still in their mouth, they will not swallow the loose tooth. Place the loose tooth in the middle of the floss and bring both ends up to tie around the tooth several times.

Fold one end of dental floss over to make a “knot” and tie the other end in a knot to secure it. After securing it, cut off the excess dental floss and store it inside your child’s tooth fairy pillow until they wake up.

Towel And Ice Pack

Another option is to use a towel. Place some ice cubes wrapped in a thin towel or cloth on top of your child’s tooth that is loose.

The cold temperature will help ease the discomfort, and if you are lucky it may even numb the area enough to get your child to fall asleep with it still in their mouth.

Too much ice can be uncomfortable so feel free to take a break. You can even ask a local anesthetic for the best dental treatment for gum tissue as well.

If they do not, simply let them go to sleep without worrying about the lost tooth until they wake up.

Wallet And String

Another option you have is to keep a string or dental floss in your wallet. You never know when you might need it, and there is always the off chance that your child may lose their first tooth before they fall asleep. If this happens, congratulations on being prepared!

Depending on the location of the tooth it may be harder to tie a string around especially in the back of the mouth. It is a good idea to put a piece of sterile gauze on the open wound or hold a clean tissue on it to reduce the risk of infection and tooth decay.

If infected root canal therapy can help with any problems that occur.

Tie the loose tooth onto the end of the string or dental floss and then tie it to your wallet. This way, when you need it, you will have it on hand until they wake up the next morning.

For a better grip, you can use a flossing pick to help loosen the tooth. Do not attempt to use a pair of pliers. The bottom line is it will be of little help with larger teeth and can transmit bacteria to your mouth and loose teeth.

Xylocaine Or Lidocaine

Another option is using an over-the-counter dental numbing gel called Xylocaine or Lidocaine. Children’s teeth have nerve endings even the front teeth so be careful to not damage them.

Use a cotton bud to place the gel on the gums around the loose tooth. If your child tolerates this well, numb the area until they fall asleep and remove it before they wake up in the morning.

The gel will last for about 4-6 hours depending on how much is applied to the gums.

If all else fails, you can try using a piece of hard candy or a lollipop. Place the candy into your child’s mouth and let them suck on it until they fall asleep. When they wake up, remove the candy from their mouth before replacing it with their tooth fairy pillow/towel/wallet combination.

Professional treatment should be sought if you are in immense pain, have, gum disease, or popped blood vessels.

Adult Teeth

Do not attempt to pull a permanent tooth on your own. With an adult tooth, there is no tooth behind it that is loose. Natural teeth are not meant to be pulled unless advised by medical professionals.

If primary teeth are pulled then it could cause severe pain, a dry socket, cause health issues, or even have an emergency visit. You will need dental work on permanent adult teeth and to see local anesthesia if this happens.

Dental practices and the dental office will help in determining if your own adult teeth need pulling or not. While you may not need dental insurance it is best to have it.

Whether you have a broken tooth, wisdom teeth, a painful tooth, or a tooth infection it is best to visit a dentist’s office.

What To Remeber

While there should be no initial pain or sharp pain with home tooth extraction you may feel pressure on the loose tooth as it’s being pulled.

If the extraction process causes an affected area where the center of the tooth was the American Academy of Pediatrics has the best methods for the health of all children.

If you choose not to use any of these methods a loose baby tooth can fall out on its own. With the right dental care and oral health, harmful bacteria can be prevented.

Long story short if you choose any of these methods your child will remember this for the rest of their lives and might even laugh about it when they are older.

If your child can withstand the nuisance of a loose tooth and a little bit of a wiggling tooth it is best to leave it alone. A pediatric dentist normally doesn’t pull teeth unless your child’s teeth send them to the emergency room.

The good news is this rarely ever happens the methods above are effective ways to pull your own tooth or child’s tooth. Try to avoid hot, cold, and crunchy foods after tooth loss.
