How To Clean Crystals Safe Ways To Cleanse and Charge
If you have been collecting and using crystals you may want to wash them. If you are curious about how to wash crystals here is what you need to know.
Crystals may contain some unwanted particles, such as dust and dirt. Keeping crystals clean is important because it can affect their quality and power.
The following methods show lots of ways to cleansing crystals. Any of these methods are great for different crystals, natural stones, healing stones, porous stones, hard stones, fragile crystals, and healing crystals.
Whether you’re going to wash a new crystal or one you’ve had for years the methods are the same. The healing power of crystals uses the stone’s vibrations to channel your energy as well as the stone itself.
We’ve got the scoop on three different ways to safely clean your crystals and important things to know when washing them!
The Power of Crystals
Crystals have been used for years as a form of alternative healing. Some people may use crystals for spiritual purposes and consider them sacred. Use crystals to promote a healthy lifestyle by keeping your collection clean and organized.
The best crystals to use on the next full moon are a piece of selenite, moonstone, amethyst, clear quartz, and black tourmaline. Mother Earth channels the white light of the moon to charge crystals.
This is an excellent way to channel your inner strengths and weaknesses and manifest the phase of the moon. You can certainly take smaller crystals or porous crystals and rid away unwanted energies in your own backyard.
There are plenty of other ways to manifest the solar energy of the moon as well as the light. By utilizing the moon you are becoming a universal cleanser.
The important thing to remember is to take deep breaths because the power of crystals is strong but may take an amount of time to fully work.
How to Wash Crystals
First Method
This method of cleansing is a water method. You can substitute warm water with warm sea water or tap water.
First, prepare a small bowl of warm water and mild soap. You can also soak them in salt water.
Second, gently scrub your favourite crystals with soapy water using only your fingertips, not nails.
Third, rinse them in a separate bowl filled with fresh, cool water to remove any remaining particles from the soap.
Fourth, pat it dry gently with a clean towel to absorb excess water and set out in the sun again for an hour or two to make sure they’re completely dried.
Lastly, once dry, your crystals are ready for use.
The easiest way to dry them is to place them near a bright light but do not let them bask in direct sunlight. Just be careful not to leave them out too long because all that moisture can lead to mold growth if left too long
Any leftover moisture can affect how well the wash works. It will also shorten the life of the crystal.
Second Method
Cleaning with Air and Light
Another crystal cleansing method is by blasting them with light from a bright source such as an overhead lamp or sunlight through a window. This method can be done in several hours, but it’s not recommended for soft stones like Selenite because they may get scratched.
The best time to do this is during daylight since artificial lighting doesn’t provide enough ultraviolet rays to evaporate the moisture in your stone.
First, soak your crystal(s) in mild soap and warm water for about fifteen minutes, making sure all areas are exposed so they absorb the water thoroughly. You can also substitute sea salt.
Next, rinse under cool, running water until the water is clear.
Lastly, place your crystal on a towel and blast it with ultraviolet light until it’s completely dry.
Note: If you live in an area that doesn’t get a lot of sunlight, try drying your crystals under a desk lamp instead. That will work just as well to remove any leftover impurities, mineral deposits, or moisture from soaking.
Third Method
How to Wash Stones Boiling In Water
A few other types of crystals can be boiled in water to remove dust. Be sure to use a stainless steel or iron pot, and avoid copper and aluminum.
Some crystals that can be boiled in water include clear quartz, rose quartz, selenite, rhodochrosite, stibnite, fluorite, malachite, azurite, moonstone, turquoise, and lapis lazuli.
1: Make sure your crystals are completely dry before boiling them.
2: Fill a pan with three to four inches of water and place over high heat until it starts to simmer.
3: Gently drop crystals into the water one by one using clean tongs or chopsticks (not your fingers!) and leave them there for five minutes at most.
Note: Do not add any crystals that are still wet.
Step 4: Use clean tongs to remove the crystal and rinse under cool, running water for a minute or so until you can hold it in your hand and it feels completely smooth and dry.
If necessary, gently scrub the stone with a soft toothbrush to remove any leftover dirt or particles from the boiling process.
The best way is to put them out in the sun for an hour or two so they dry completely before using them again.
Note: Some crystals may get discolored when boiled. Such as fluorite turning green, moonstone turning darker blue, and malachite oxidizing into deep emerald colors. This is okay since it’s only temporary if the stones are.
These common methods keep your delicate crystals clean for a long time and even bring them back to their original state. Other methods use a water bath, moon water, rose petals, table salt, and cold water.
You may also use a singing bowl to help remove stubborn energy that may be stored in your crystals. A tuning fork can be used to cleanse crystals as well.
Things To Remember About Washing Crystals
Be careful not to drop your crystals. If they scratch, it’s likely the crystal will never be as clear or polished again after trying to clean them.
If you’re looking for a quick fix that doesn’t involve any water at all, try using plain rubbing alcohol on your crystals instead.
An effective way to clean them is to add about half an ounce of alcohol to a jar big enough to hold your crystal(s), and give it a gentle shake until all the dirt comes loose inside.
Let stand for several minutes before dumping out the liquid and allowing it to dry in sunlight or artificial light for an hour or two.
The good news is that clean water will make your crystal look like a new stone. A good rule of thumb is to clean all of your crystals at least once a month.
An online store that sells crystals will have a smudge stick and everything you need to clean your crystals.
A Few Warnings About Cleaning Crystals
It’s not advisable to use toothpaste, mouthwash, bleach, vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide to clean crystals. Any abrasive cleaners can damage the surface of your stones. (Bleach is especially dangerous since it will corrode them.)
If you try this method on a soft stone-like Selenite, make sure no water at all gets in the crystal when it’s drying. Too much moisture will cause it to crack or dissolve completely.
Always ask a knowledgeable person if you’re not sure how to clean a particular type of crystal because each mineral varies when it comes to what methods work best.
There are various methods for cleaning crystals. Some may turn out better than others in terms of effectiveness. In general, everything works more quickly and easily with two ingredients: patience and elbow grease!
If your own intuition is telling you to be careful when cleansing softer stones you aren’t wrong. The right way to clean them is to soak them for up to an hour in water.

Some types of minerals may be damaged from washing due to their hardness, such as quartz crystal points which are created through high heat processes
Avoid using chemicals when washing crystals; natural techniques are best. A great addition to a wonderful cleanser includes a natural body of water that has all the minerals needed to cleanse them.
The surfaces of most stones are porous and will absorb water if allowed to remain wet for too long. It’s important to avoid getting any crystal wet unless you intend on washing it immediately after you obtain it.

When leaving crystals outside overnight make sure there isn’t any dew nearby. Dew can damage certain types of stones if moisture is left to sit on the surface for too long. Some stones will fare better than others when it comes to dew, but quartz is extremely sensitive.
Make sure the crystals are completely dry before storing them.
Crystals
Many people like to meditate with their crystals or cleanse/charge them before putting them away. They do this so they’re ready to be used again later.
Keep in mind that water can damage certain crystals because of how porous they are; do not store any stones in a container that has much water inside! Be conservative when filling bowls with water and use as little as possible.
