Danny Ramirez is popular for his work on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Orange Is the New Black.

Havana Rose Liu plays the role of Darby. Fans will recognize her from her work in The Chair and Mayday.
Damien Power is the director of No Exit. His other works include Killing Ground and Peekaboo.
The Inspiration
The film No Exit is based on the novel of the same name by author Taylor Adams. The film’s director, Damien Power shares his thoughts on the novel.
Power says, “As a novel, it had a great character-driven plot, it’s got high stakes, it’s got these surprising twists and turns, um, this incredible, hostile setting, and, you know, this great ticking clock with the girl in the van.”
Damien mentions, “I can see why people read it and thought this would make a great movie” and adds, “So did I.”
Engaging Characters
One engaging aspect about No Exit is how closely audiences get to know each character. Since most of the story takes place with just a few characters waiting out a storm together, audiences spend a lot of time with everyone.
Havana Rose Liu who plays the protagonist Darby, talks about her experience bringing this role to life. She says, “I just fell in love with Darby right away.” Liu talks about playing Darby and says, “With Darby, I barely even had to think. It just felt like it was flowing right from me.”
Havana continues discussing Darby, “I find her to be gritty, and bold, and charming, and also tortured, and-and also very vulnerable in a way that- that I don’t think we always see heroic characters holding on to throughout the course of the film, not to give anything away.”
Liu continues to gush about her character, adding, “I think for me, it was just the best, most sort of complex, nuanced character I could have asked to play, given that so many of her faults really are her strengths, and vice versa.”
Damien Power chimes in and shares his thoughts on the film’s characters. He says, “This is not a film about a character or characters who go on a journey, and- and grow and change. It’s really a film about how true character is revealed under pressure. Um, and that applies to every single character in that room.”
Relating to Real Life
Further discussing the characters in No Exit Power mentions how much we see everyone act under pressure. He says, “The film asks that question of the characters all the time. Who are you when this happens, who are you now? Who are you when the pressure’s really on?”
Since audiences spend so much time getting to know each character, we truly see them in a variety of real-world situations.
Dennis Haysbert talks about his relationship with fellow cast mate Dale Dickey, and how they worked together to play characters with differing morals.
He reveals, “Dale and I would go out and have dinners together.” He adds, “everything that we did, it was all based in love.”
Faithful to the Source
Oftentimes, when a movie adaptation of a book is released, fans of the source material are eager to learn if the movie is faithful to the original story.
In the case of No Exit, Damien Power assures fans that, “The plot is pretty faithful, um, to the novel.” He also adds, “We made some tweaks to the characters, and their backstories, and their backgrounds, and how they came to be there.”
However, Power clarifies, “I don’t think there are any elements from the novel that I wish we had done.”
