Post-credits scene in “Black Widow” explained
When a new Marvel film finishes, fans eagerly await the post-credits scene. These scenes range from being teasers for future Marvel projects or fun gags calling back to the film. While most recent Marvel films have had two post-credits scenes, “Black Widow” only has one.
WARNING: “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “Black Widow” spoilers are ahead.
The Post-Credits Scene Explained
The post-credits scene makes a time jump to after “Avengers: Endgame.” With a new dog in tow, Yelena visits the grave of her sister Natasha Romanoff.
While mourning, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (also known as Val) approaches her with a new assignment. She asks Yelena to kill Hawkeye, claiming he is responsible for Romanoff’s death.
Who is Val?
Julia Louis-Dreyfus of “Seinfeld” and “Veep” fame plays Val. Those who watched “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney+ will recognize Val from her interactions with John Walker. It was intended for Val to make her first appearance in “Black Widow.” Due to pandemic delays, she was introduced in the Disney+ series instead.
Val’s character in the films is currently shrouded in mystery. In the comics, Val has held many identities. She has been a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Madame Hydra, and even a sleeper operative for the Skrulls.
Implications for Future Marvel Projects
Following her recruitment of Walker and Yelena, Val seems to be putting a team together. The Marvel comics have introduced groups of villains and anti-heroes like the Dark Avengers and Thunderbolts, so perhaps Val is forming an Avengers-like team. Expect Val to continue her schemes in future Marvel projects.
Since Yelena has Hawkeye in her sights, expect her to appear in the “Hawkeye” Disney+ series premiering later in 2021. Hopefully, he can clear things up with Romanoff’s sister before things get ugly between the two.
What did you think of “Black Widow” and its post-credits scene? What do you think will happen with Val and Yelena in future Marvel projects?
