Ricotta and Walnut Toast Recipe

This Ricotta Toast Recipe drizzled in honey and sprinkled with walnuts is sure to ignite a passionate taste and sensory experience.

Whether you pair your breakfast or afternoon snack with an iced cold water, a coffee, a tea, or any other flavorfilled beverage this ricotta toast will provide it perfect companionship. One of my favorite parts of this meal is its versatility. For the bread portion you can utilize any of your preferences. Or you can choose to experiment with different options on different days to find your favorite. Options include sourdough bread, whole wheat bread, bagels, baguettes, brioche, and more.

All the ingredients can be easily packaged and transported as well. The honey, walnuts, ricotta cheese, and bread can all easily be stored in containers to take on the go. Thus, making it perfect for a snack at work or a meal you prepare while commuting. You can alter the portion size to your liking. I find half a bagel suffices especially when pairing it with a more filling drink such as coffee. Either way, whether you choose one or more slices of bread the carbs will provide you with the energy needed for a full day.

Background:

Experiences are integral, fundamental to the formation of memories. The five senses such as taste, smell, sight, sound, and touch allow experiences to unfold and enable us to witness them at full capacity. Thus, whenever you eat you are using ⅘ of those senses, and on special occasions all five. For me, eating and life experiences have always been integrated, so closely intertwined that they are viewed as one. This ricotta toast allows you to have that opportunity. It evokes your senses and provides you with a meal that is more than just food, but a memory. The first time I ate this dish I was abroad, staying at a close friend’s home. We had the meal for breakfast and although it was a few years ago, I can still remember the feeling of the crisp air that morning and each crunch that accompanied every bite I took.

Even more satisfying is making it yourself, as at the end when you finally go to sit down and eat it, it’s all the more rewarding. Whether you eat this ricotta toast on the train to work, a leisurely morning, in a breakroom, or even at a picnic the moment will not only be remembered but transformed by this meal. You’ll remember the sounds you heard on the train and the voices that lingered through the air. You’ll remember the mingling of coworkers and the laughter of friends. This ricotta, honey, and walnut toast encompasses all your wants, needs, and desires. Even those you didn’t know you had.

Ricotta Toast Ingredients:

Example: First, let’s chat ingredients…

  • Bread: Any type of bread will do whether it be sourdough, wholewheat, brioche, or a bagel. (I use half an everything bagel from Trader Joe’s)
  •  Ricotta Cheese. Use the portion of ricotta cheese that you like. I spread the same amount as I would do if using cream cheese. ( I use whole milk ricotta cheese)
  • Honey. Use as much honey as you like. Around 2-4 tablespoons is sufficient
  • Walnuts. Use around 8-10 walnut halves.

How to Make Ricotta Toast:

  • Prep Your Bread. If you are using a bagel cut it in half. If you are using bread select your slice amount. Then place it in a toaster, toaster oven, or oven. Toast on the medium setting for about 5-10 minutes. You can leave it for shorter or longer depending on your preference.
  • Add Ricotta. Once your bread is toasted, coat it with ricotta cheese. Use the desired amount. I typically apply it as if I were using cream cheese.
  • Add Toppings. Next, add the honey. Drizzle it on top of the ricotta cheese. Then add the walnut halves on top.

Notes:

Any type of bread is suitable such as sourdough toast, whole wheat toast, normal toast, brioche, or any type of bagel.
