  • 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons canola oil, divided
  • 8 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, optional
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • fresh basil leaves, optional
  • black sesame tahini, or black sesame paste
A bowl of soup with bread on a blue cloth.

  1. Preheat oven to 400°.
  2. Place tomatoes in a greased baking tray.

Cooking

  1. Bake until softened, 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove and discard skins.
  2. Meanwhile, in a Dutch oven or large saucepan, sauté onion in remaining 2 Tbsp oil until tender.
  3. Add tomatoes, water, salt, and pepper flakes (if desired). Bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce below medium heat; cover and bring to a simmer for about 30 minutes. Cool slightly.
  5. In a blender, process soup in batches until smooth like tomato paste. Return to pan. Stir in cream and heat through.
  6. Add basil if desired.

Serving

  1. Ladle soup into serving bowls immediately.
  2. Transfer a generous portion of black tahini into a squeeze bottle or plastic bag. Snip a corner of the bag for piping.
  3. Starting from the edge of the bowl, pipe a thin line of tahini straight across.
  4. Rotate bowl a 1/4 or 1/8 turn, depending on how elaborate a spiderweb you’re intending. Pipe another thin line across the surface of the soup.
  5. Repeat until the homemade tomato soup looks like vaguely equal pizza slices.
  6. Now draw slightly sloping lines from one corner of a slice line to the next, repeating all the way around in a ring, then downward toward the center like a spiral.
  7. Drag a toothpick from edge to center along the top of the soup, in spots that seem too straight or grid-like.
  8. Serve this delicious Halloween spider web soup recipe topped with veggie ghosts or bats, jack o’ lantern pretzels, or a stalk of celery with a plastic spider ring slipped down its length to decorate.
  9. Cool soup and transfer to freezer containers. Freeze up to 3 months. To use, thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

Tips and Variations

  • Milk can be used for part of the water for an even creamier soup, with 1/2 cup milk to 1 1/2 cups water as a mixture.
  • Canola oil can easily be substituted for olive oil, and heavy cream can be replaced with sour cream.
  • Speaking of sour cream, you can switch up this soup’s aesthetic and reduce its umami slightly by replacing the black sesame web for a sour cream one.
  • Another fun option is creating a sour cream web, then adding a black sesame spider (or two, or more).
  • If you’d rather not roast your own tomatoes, canned tomato paste can be used by skipping to cooking step 5 to still create a tasty tomato soup.
