Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am a Certified Self-Defense Instructor, Entrepreneur and Accountant. That’s not a combo you normally put together! But I’ve managed to carve out a little niche that marries my financial business sense, my online entrepreneurial spirit, and my passion for empowering women. I love what I do every day so it never feels like “work”. It’s my passion!

How did you come up with the idea of Defense Divas?

I am a domestic violence survivor and there is a tremendous amount of emotional scarring that DV leaves on a woman. I did traditional talk therapy, support groups, etc. and they help the healing process a lot but I still had lingering fears, resentment and mistrust . One day it just hit me that it was time to do something to turn that tragedy into a triumph. I thought to myself,

“If I have to live with the fact that I experienced that stuff; then by God’s grace I am going to make sure that I turn those experiences into something good for my life.”

After that, the idea unfolded in my head quickly. I knew that I wanted to create a resource for women to not only purchase cute stun guns and pepper sprays, but to also be an educational resource where they could get valuable self-defense and safety awareness information. Information that might just save a woman’s life and hopefully prevent her from experiencing what I had experienced.

Can you tell our readers a little about Defense Divas & what you’re all about?

In a nutshell, Defense Divas is about educating, equipping and empowering women to protect themselves against all forms of violence. We strive to be the primary online resource for women’s self-defense products and personal safety information.

 

How did people react to your products in the beginning?

Women love our whole concept! I work really hard to make sure that I find unique products that women don’t see in their local stores. Who wants to put down money for a boring black stun gun? It’s not exactly like buying a new purse, but with our products, it kind of is! Our customers love that they have choices to reflect their personal style in their purchase.

What is the top-selling product from Defense Divas?

We have two products that run neck-and-neck for the top seller. The first is our Ladies Choice Pink Stun Gun. It was created as the direct result of feedback from women about what they wanted most in a stun gun. It has the best set of features and a stylish design.

The other top seller is our Smack Mini Stun Gun Key Chain. It is the smallest stun gun on the market today and packs a whopping 20 MILLION volts!

What are three things you feel every woman should have with her at all times?

1. a good lip gloss

What do you hope people gain from Defense Divas?

I hope that we are a valuable resource to educate, equip and empower women to protect themselves through self-defense and safety awareness.

What is one piece of advice you would give to women who want to begin some form of self-defense?

Practice. Practice. Practice. Whether it is practicing how to use your stun gun or practicing how to do a throat jab; the skills need to be automatic when you are in a real-life panic situation. That only comes with practice.

What is one thing you wish people knew about self-defense?

The #1 self-defense is safety awareness. Attackers are looking for an easy target. Walk with your head high and with confidence; aware of your surroundings. Double date with a girlfriend when you are going on a first date. Check that all the windows in your apartment are locked once a month. Carry your stun gun in your hand when walking to your car, not in your purse. Women don’t realize that simply being prepared can deter an attacker from even approaching you. We try to educate women on personal safety awareness through our social media posts and self-defense blog.

What’s a common myth of self-defense for women?

The most common myth is that you have to be in shape to be proficient at self-defense. That’s not true! Self-defense techniques for real-life are designed to be easy to learn, easy to remember and easy to do by any person of any age or size. Real-life self defense techniques are designed to allow you to escape. You’re not trying to put a 300 lb. man into a head lock. You are using the tools you have available to leverage your ability to escape and call 911.

How do you think Defense Divas is empowering for women?

I hope that we convey an entire company culture that inspires women to claim their personal power and right to protect themselves against violence of any kind. We try to do this through our products, our social media outlets, our educational blog and any other way that we can reach women with this valuable information.

What is one activity you do often that empowers you?

This is probably TMI, but I listen motivational mp3s every day when I am taking my shower. It just plays in the background while I’m getting ready to start my day and gets me in the right head space to tackle whatever comes my way. It’s a great way to start the day!

What is a quote you live by every day?

If I had a tagline for my life it would be

“Let your smile change the world. Don’t let the world change your smile.”

Unfortunately, we live in a world where bad people and bad things exist. However, I also have a choice each day to either allow those things to be a negative impact on me or make me a stronger better woman. I make a conscious effort to make a positive impact on at least one person’s life each day.
