The social media world was shook earlier this month when news of TikTok’s potential ban surfaced in the U.S. Influential TikTok users responded almost instantly with disbelief. I think it’s safe to say we’re all wondering why this app is really getting banned. And, what is next for the world of social media?
What is TikTok?
For those who are not familiar with TikTok, let me fill you in on what it is. ByteDance, the Beijing-based internet technology company, developed the app in September of 2016. The app is a social networking app where users can create and share videos. Short dance routines, lip-syncing, comedy, and talent videos are popular categories on the app.
I’m sure you have seen the Renegade dance making its way across your screen. Even celebrities are taking advantage of the viral social app to interact with their fans. TikTok is most popular among Millennials and Gen Zs. Despite that, it has even attracted some older generations.
TikTok Banned
Now it seems TikTok might see its last days. The Wall Street Journal mentioned that ByteDance has been labeled as the culprit of collecting more-than-needed data from its users. The U.S. government believes the company is using the app as a channel to collect information on Americans. Countries like India have already banned the video-sharing app. So if TikTok really does get banned, what will be next?
TikTokers’ Response
Since hearing this news, influential TikTokers have been calculating their next moves. They are encouraging their audiences to follow them on other social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Also, many TikTokers have built up a significant number of followers. Taking away that content and following from them would be astonishing!
What’s next?
This app has been an amazing platform for users to reach a younger audience and showcase their talents. Rumor has it that a similar app is surfacing to make its debut in place of TikTok. Could this truly be the end of the currently trending app, or will it stick around for a while longer?
