Top 10 Reasons We are Excited for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
If you are like me, you watched Gilmore Girls religiously! You know every story line, quirky quote, and ridiculous character that was ever highlighted on the show. Personally, I took things to the extreme because I still speak in Lorelai quotes and talk just as quickly as Rory does to this day. Needless to say, the Gilmore Girls duo essentially raised me! When I found out that there was going to be a new Netflix series about what my favorite mother/daughter team was up to now, I was thrilled! And it seems like the rest of the world is too.
HERE ARE MY TOP TEN THINGS WE SHOULD ALL BE EXCITED FOR WHEN THE SERIES COMES OUT ON NOVEMBER 25TH:
THE SEASONS
Netflix announced awhile back that the four part “event” is going to have each episode representing each of the seasons! The downside is that there are only four episodes, but at least we get a look at what a year is like for Lorelai and Rory! So much can happen in a year, especially for these women. It’s a whole lot better of an option than a movie would have been too. Plus, this means that there will be snow and we all know how Lorelai feels about snow!
LORELAI AND RORY: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
We left Lorelai and Rory after Rory graduated from Yale and was about to go on the campaign trail with Barack Obama (yeah, it was that long ago). Lorelai and Luke had been broken up, which as the only Team Christopher member, I was pleased about. But alas, Lorelai and Luke got back together at the very end! Now, Rory is trying to figure out her life and Lorelai and Luke are having problems… or so it seems at least. Even though everyone got what they wanted, they are still representing life and life has it fair share of ups and downs!
REVISITING CHILTON AND PARIS
Paris was at Chilton in the trailer. She is portrayed by actress Liza Weil who has a lead role on How to Get Away with Murder, so her time in the four part series might be limited. That being said, we saw her and Rory both at the place that they met: Chilton! Long ago are the days where Rory didn’t feel at home there. Now, she’s embracing her old high school and everything it did to propel her into her future. The only question to ask is pretty simple: Why are they back there? Also, who remembers when Chad Michael Murray was a student at Chilton and one of Rory’s (almost) love interests?
HONORING EDWARD HERRMANN
Edward Herrmann who portrays Richard Gilmore passed away in 2014 at the age of seventy-one due to brain cancer. When the show’s cast reunited at ATX a year later, they left an empty seat for him onstage. It’s been said that the show revolves around Richard Gilmore’s death, which is unsurprising because Richard had health problems, specifically with his heart, during the show’s run. As sad as this is, this gives us all the opportunity to honor and remember Edward Herrmann and how he touched all of our hearts as Richard Gilmore.
EMILY WEARING JEANS
Emily is going through a transition period in her life after Richard’s death. I didn’t think we would ever see Emily Gilmore wearing jeans though! This is so unlike Emily and difficult to understand, even in her state of mourning. Emily as a widow is going to be tough to watch, but that’s who Emily has always been. As much as we hate when she’s mean and selfish, she has a heart and cares about her girls. We cringe when she does some of her manipulation tactics, but love her when she shows her true self, when she is vulnerable. I don’t want Emily to change and seeing her as a widow is going to be an interesting aspect of the whole series!
SOOKIE
Melissa McCarthy wasn’t supposed to be in the series? Or was she? Or wasn’t she? Fans everywhere were worried because she had come out and said that she hadn’t been asked to come back. Turns out, she has become such a star that the creators didn’t think she would be interested! Which is crazy talk because of course she was interested! Sookie was only in one scene in the trailer, but she was still there. Better yet, she was still cooking and her quirky old self! Is anyone else curious to see what her and Jackson’s kids look like now?
KIRK, TAYLOR, AND STARS HOLLOW’S SHENANIGANS
The town now has something they didn’t have before: access to new technology. I think it’s hilarious that a large part of the trailer had to deal with the craziness of the town: festivals, the phone booth, and Taylor’s normal crazy self. Also, Kirk was at Friday night dinner at Emily’s house which is my favorite thing that I saw that came out of the trailer! Stars Hollow is the town that everyone wanted to live in and I do not think it will disappoint us with this new series!
RORY’S SELF-DISCOVERY EXPLORATION
Rory is apparently at a stand-still in her life. She says in the trailer that she has neither a career, nor any credit. As a writer myself, I get that. Rory needs to figure out who she is and what direction she wants the rest of her life to go. She’s an inspiration to all women because she is doing what is best for her. Everyone should have passion about something and be happy! Now, we get to see Rory find herself and figure her life out.
JESS
While I in no way believe that the focus should be on who Rory ends up with, romance is still part of her life. She can be independent, finding herself, and falling in love all in one! It doesn’t make her less of a feminist. So, if I had to pick between Dean, Jess, and Logan, I would pick Jess (like most people)! Very few people would pick Dean and, let’s be real, no one is team Logan. Jess understands Rory and when they saw each other again during the latter part of Rory’s college career, he had matured. Yes, they needed to break up… but that doesn’t mean they aren’t meant to be together.
PAUL ANKA THE DOG
Paul Anka didn’t make an appearance in the trailed for A Year in the Life which got me panicking! While everyone was excited about the pig that showed up in the trailer, it made me think that Paul Anka might have been replaced! I even thought that he might have passed away. Fortunately, we were able to catch up with him in this interview! (Yes, I said interview.) And it was amazing! Check it out here!
With how excited everyone is about Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, there’s a chance it might not be worth the hype… not because it won’t be good, but because there has been so much anticipation for it! That being said, if it is great and it gains millions of viewers, there’s a chance this isn’t the last Gilmore Girls special series? A girl can hope, right?
